9 suspended amid political row over J&K books ‘glorifying’ separatism

The Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, suspended eight officials from the School Education Department and removed a contractual worker after allegations surfaced that two textbooks distributed in government schools 'glorified' separatist leaders and convicted terrorists. The books, titled 'Personalities and Legends of J&K' and 'Great Personalities of Jammu and Kashmir,' were authored by Hilal Ahmad, Santosh Meena, Sushant Giri, and published by Oberoi Book Service and Anurag Prakashan. The texts reportedly portrayed figures like Maqbool Bhat, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Massarat Alam, and Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as great personalities. The authors and publishers were banned, though the Hindustan Times could not independently verify the claims. Opposition leader Sunil Sharma criticized the action as 'academic jihad.' The government accused the sub-committee and supervisory officers of negligence and failure to properly vet the books, leading to the suspensions and an inquiry led by Ashwani Kumar.
