A 29-year-old man has voluntarily left a cult organization and turned himself in to authorities in Edo State, Nigeria, following a public appeal against cultism by local officials. The individual, an aspiring musician, surrendered a Beretta pistol to security forces in Benin City after being influenced by a message delivered by Blessing Ebhodaghe, the acting Chairman of Esan West Local Government Area. The incident came to light through a statement issued by Patrick Ebojele, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo. According to the statement, the Zonal Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, Joel Aidamebor, revealed that the event unfolded after Ebhodaghe received reports of unusual activity near his home. He promptly notified the Edo State Security Corps, which coordinated with the police. A team of security personnel arrived, detained several young individuals, and brought them to a police station for investigation. Some of these youths were later released following further inquiries. Ebhodaghe then convened a meeting with the detained youths, urging them to distance themselves from cultism, armed robbery, and other illegal activities. Shortly afterward, one of the participants approached Ebhodaghe expressing his desire to disengage from the cult. The chairman immediately relayed this information to the Edo State Security Corps and the relevant police division. The young man then voluntarily handed over a Beretta pistol to the authorities. The weapon was transported to Benin City, where it was officially transferred to the police. The statement praised the youth's decision to renounce cultism, describing it as commendable and encouraging others to adopt lawful lifestyles by abandoning criminal organizations. It emphasized the Edo State Government's ongoing efforts under Governor Monday Okpebholo to combat issues such as cultism, kidnapping, and armed robbery. Ebhodaghe extended an appeal to young people engaged in cult activities, urging them to follow the example of the young man and pursue more constructive paths. The 29-year-old, who identified himself as an aspiring musician, stated he had no remorse about leaving the group. He explained that he was inspired by Ebhodaghe’s address on the risks associated with cultism and other societal vices during a recent visit to his neighborhood. The statement noted that the young man shared his decision with a friend before turning himself in. When asked why he chose to surrender the gun instead of disposing of it elsewhere, he explained that he wanted to prevent its potential misuse in future crimes that could implicate him. Governor Okpebholo reportedly encouraged the former cult member to leverage his experience to dissuade other youths from joining such groups.
