Burkins, who is a mother of two young children, noticed that her ear did not pop as usual after landing. This small detail soon became the catalyst for a nine-month ordeal that culminated in a terrifying diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Upon returning home, Burkins found that her ear remained unresponsive, and the situation worsened rapidly. She described experiencing blood flowing into her throat, which would only exit through her nose when she bent over at a sharp angle. Her hearing progressively declined, accompanied by a constant ringing in her ears. Burkins also noted growing fatigue and unintentional weight loss, which alarmed her enough to seek medical attention. Initially, her doctors attributed her symptoms to altitude sickness, suggesting they would resolve on their own. However, the condition persisted, prompting further investigation. Eventually, Burkins was referred to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. During an examination, the doctor identified a mass obstructing her Eustachian tube and observed inflammation and enlargement of her adenoids. These findings raised concerns, leading to a recommendation for a biopsy. Over the subsequent two months, Burkins endured increasing discomfort, noting that the left side of her throat had become significantly swollen and distorted her jawline. She underwent a second biopsy, which revealed concerning results. The doctor expressed uncertainty about the nature of the growth but described it as highly suspicious. Imaging scans uncovered multiple lumps and abnormalities, including swollen lymph nodes near the base of her skull. Following these findings, Burkins underwent surgery, and the final biopsy results confirmed her worst fear, she had been diagnosed with NPC. This rare form of head and neck cancer originates in the nasopharynx, the area behind the nose and above the mouth. Common symptoms include persistent nasal congestion, nosebleeds, hearing loss, and swollen lymph nodes. NPC is notably linked to infections such as the Epstein-Barr virus, as well as genetic and environmental factors. While it is more prevalent in regions like East and Southeast Asia, North Africa, and the Arctic, it is exceedingly uncommon in the United States, with fewer than one case per 100,000 individuals annually. Since her diagnosis in February 2026, Burkins has received chemotherapy and radiation therapy. She is currently approaching the completion of her treatment and reports that her condition is improving. Doctors remain optimistic about her prognosis, indicating that the tumors are shrinking and responding positively to the interventions. Despite the challenges, Burkins expresses hope that her experience might help others recognize early signs of similar conditions.
