Zimske igre 2030. Olimpijske planove razdvajaju francuski grad

Plans for the Winter Olympics 2030 have sparked intense debate within the French city of Briançon, with local residents divided over the proposed transformation of a historic UNESCO World Heritage site into one of the Olympic villages. The plan involves converting four of the twelve buildings in the Fort des Têtes, a centuries-old fortress perched above the town, into accommodations for athletes and organizers during the Games. After the event, these structures would be repurposed into 62 social housing units, creating a new district in Briançon that is intended to endure long after the Olympics conclude. The proposal has drawn sharp criticism from opponents who argue that the project is both environmentally and financially unsustainable. Bernadette Brunet, president of the association dedicated to researching and protecting the Cervières Valley, of which Briançon is part, called the idea “pure madness.” She questioned the justification for spending millions on infrastructure for just fifteen days of winter sports. Arnaud, a member of a civic collective opposing the Olympics, echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the natural tranquility of the area, located five kilometers from the nearest roundabout. He described the plan to build a new urban quarter in such a pristine location as “unbelievable.” Critics also pointed to the financial burden of the project, estimated at 133 million euros, with 70 million coming from public funds. Among the planned developments is a cable car linking the Fort des Têtes to the city center, with its base station integrated into a residential complex featuring around 100 apartments. Stéphane Faure-Brac, another member of the opposition group, warned that this would place additional strain on public resources while altering the traffic patterns and visual landscape of Briançon. He criticized the juxtaposition of modern cable cars and wires against the backdrop of historical architecture. Supporters of the project see potential benefits for the region’s future. The city already bears visible signs of Olympic influence, including large promotional posters at the train station and murals depicting Olympic themes adorning building facades. Romain Baron, a taxi driver, welcomed the planned upgrades to the railway line connecting Briançon to Marseille, stating that improved rail access would enhance connectivity to ski resorts and the broader region. Axel Barnier, manager of the local ice hockey team “Diables Rouges de Briançon” (Red Devils of Briançon), highlighted opportunities for upgrading local sports facilities, noting ongoing renovations to the sports park and altitude training center. Despite the enthusiasm from some quarters, the controversy shows no sign of abating. Opponents have filed legal challenges to contest the hosting of the Olympics, and their efforts remain active. The municipal administration of Briançon did not respond to requests for comment from RTS, leaving the outcome of the dispute uncertain. As discussions continue, the fate of the Fort des Têtes, and the broader vision for Briançon’s future, remains in question.
