David Sullivan, one of the co-owners of West Ham United, has been advised by London Stadium to avoid attending home matches following a joint investigation by BBC Panorama and The Times. The probe uncovered seven allegations of sexual exploitation and predatory behavior against Sullivan, which he has firmly denied. Sullivan stepped down as joint chairman of the club just before the investigation aired, stating he wished to concentrate on countering what he described as "factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations concerning my personal life." Despite his resignation, he remains the club’s largest shareholder. The investigation also disclosed that Sullivan has been prohibited from interacting with West Ham’s women’s and youth teams for three years due to safeguarding issues. This ban was imposed after a serious allegation about his conduct was brought to the Football Association in 2023. Sullivan dismissed the claim as false, arguing that since he had never met any academy or women’s team players “1-2-1” during his 16-year tenure, the restriction represented a “meaningless limitation...for a quiet life.” London Stadium became aware of these restrictions only after the BBC’s report surfaced. West Ham, currently in the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League in May, is set to host its first home match of the new season, a Carabao Cup encounter against Portsmouth, on Saturday. Sullivan was frequently seen at the London Stadium last season, often seated in the directors’ box. A spokesperson for London Stadium stated that they sought additional information following media reports about a safeguarding issue being handled internally by the club. They confirmed that West Ham informed them the matter had been investigated and that the club does not believe there is an ongoing risk related to Sullivan’s presence at the stadium. Nevertheless, the stadium operator recommended that Sullivan refrain from attending games due to the potential for demonstrations and anti-social behavior by some spectators. This advice follows previous fan backlash against Sullivan’s management style, including a large protest in September last year demanding his exit. West Ham has not commented on the situation, though it is believed the club plans to collaborate with London Stadium to enable Sullivan’s attendance at matches. As of now, Sullivan has not issued a public statement. In separate developments, BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Tony Livesey resigned from the station after 16 years of service. His departure followed allegations made against Sullivan, although he had previously worked as editor-in-chief of Sullivan’s Daily and Sunday Sport publications. One alleged victim claimed that Livesey had arranged a meeting between herself and Sullivan in 1999. Livesey denied any involvement, stating he had “no recollection” of introducing the woman to Sullivan and that it was “not part” of his duties. He expressed “great sympathy for a woman who may have become a victim,” while rejecting any implication that he played a role in the incident, calling the allegation “abhorrent.” As the club prepares for its return to competitive football, the fallout from the allegations continues to affect both Sullivan and the broader organization. The situation underscores the complex interplay between personal conduct, professional responsibility, and public perception within the sports industry. With the upcoming match against Portsmouth, the focus will remain on how the club navigates this challenging period.
