Wedium, a new social media app launched in Germany, aims to position itself as a serious competitor to TikTok by offering a more privacy-focused and family-friendly alternative. The app, based in Berlin, has already begun its beta testing phase in March and is designed with features that differentiate it from mainstream platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Users who open the app for the first time find it familiar, with functions like hearting content, commenting, and creating posts mirroring those on TikTok. However, the developers emphasize that they are not simply copying TikTok but building an “authentic alternative” to major tech giants. The platform’s founders, including co-founder Nele Meissner, have stated that Wedium focuses less on video content than on fostering a safer online environment. One of the key features is the requirement for users to verify their identity using government-issued documents before posting anything. This approach aligns with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), ensuring data protection standards are met. Additionally, 50 percent of advertising revenue generated through the platform will go directly to content creators, a policy intended to support independent creators rather than large corporations. To fund its operations, Wedium has raised 200,000 euros in total investment, with 50,000 euros coming from the founding team themselves. The company plans to sustain itself through a combination of ad revenue and a freemium model, allowing users to access the service for free or pay 8.99 euros per month for an ad-free experience. As of now, the platform does not yet have advertising clients. The startup currently employs ten staff members, though not all work exclusively on the project. The founding team consists of five individuals, four of whom are employed in a communications agency, which reflects the company’s focus on professional, community-driven engagement over rapid growth. The developers describe themselves as parents and entrepreneurs seeking greater safety for children in the digital space. They argue that current social media platforms are controlled by American and Chinese tech companies, which they believe pose a threat to democratic values. “To escape the feeling of helplessness, we just started,” Meissner explained. “Now we’re building a social network and want to make it better.” Wedium’s algorithm is designed to promote balanced and healthy content consumption. It offers two distinct feeds: one showing posts from friends and followed accounts, and another featuring content that might interest the user beyond their immediate network. While the algorithm is interest-based, it avoids pushing extreme views or distorting public discourse. The platform has consulted regularly with media experts and a youth protection specialist to ensure its algorithm promotes positive engagement. Users aged 13 and older can access the app, but they must be registered under the supervision of an authorized guardian. This ensures that only age-appropriate content is displayed. Unlike some other platforms, Wedium does not require users to provide real names, although it encourages minors to keep their real names private. Upon launching the app, users will not encounter an empty feed, as the platform includes videos similar to those found on TikTok, along with content from new users.
