Switzerland’s federal council member Albert Rösti has addressed concerns over prolonged drought conditions affecting the country. The issue has led to significant changes in traditional practices, including the cancellation of fireworks displays during the national holiday on August 1st. Additionally, historical steam trains have been grounded due to heightened wildfire risks linked to the dry weather. The impact of the drought has extended beyond public celebrations and into the realm of heritage railways. In response to the increased risk of wildfires, several historic steam locomotives have been taken out of service. This includes the Sursee-Triengen-Bahn, which operates a narrow-gauge railway through the Lucerne region. The line, established in 1912, had planned a special steam train journey on August 1st but has now cancelled it. According to Matthias Emmenegger, the managing director of the railway company, the decision was made due to the high risk of fire. “The risk of a fire is simply too great,” he stated. The Sursee-Triengen-Bahn faces unique challenges because its tracks were never electrified, making it reliant on steam power. Steam engines pose specific hazards under current conditions. Glowing particles can escape from two critical points: the chimney and the firebox. Despite measures such as spark arresters, there is still a possibility that embers could ignite dry grass or fields. As a result, the railway company has opted to pause operations until the threat subsides. The situation is not isolated to this particular railway. Other historic steam lines across Switzerland have also suspended services. For example, the Rigi Bahnen AG has called off planned excursions with a rack-and-pinion steam locomotive from Goldau to the Rigi mountain. Similarly, the Brünig-Dampfbahn has halted its scheduled trips between Interlaken East and Giswil. These decisions reflect a broader trend among heritage rail operators who are prioritizing safety amid the ongoing drought. While some steam lines have completely ceased operations, others have adapted by using diesel or electric locomotives instead. On the Furka-Bergstrecke, which connects Realp in the canton of Uri to Gletsch in Valais, a steam engine continues to operate between Realp and Gletsch. However, from Gletsch to Oberwald, a diesel locomotive is used due to the wildfire risk. Meanwhile, the Dampfbahn-Verein Zürcher Oberland chose to run a historical electric train last Sunday rather than using steam-powered vehicles. The Sursee-Triengen-Bahn is considering potential adjustments to its schedule. Unlike other lines, it does not have access to either electricity or diesel power, making it difficult to adapt quickly. Maintaining a diesel locomotive solely for exceptional circumstances would be costly and impractical according to Emmenegger. “It doesn’t make sense to try to force things,” he remarked. As the heatwave continues, the Swiss meteorological service warns that temperatures will remain high throughout the coming weeks. While the exact intensity of the upcoming heatwave compared to previous periods is uncertain, it is clear that the drought conditions will persist. Local thunderstorms may bring some rain, but these are unlikely to provide substantial relief. The combination of extreme heat and continued dryness poses ongoing challenges for both the environment and infrastructure management across the country.
