Wildfires have ravaged large parts of central Spain, destroying over 80,000 hectares of land and leaving entire communities in ruins. Among the hardest-hit areas is La Adrada, a small town located approximately one-and-a-half hours west of Madrid with a population of around 2,800 residents. The fires, which have become the largest in Spain’s history, began in mid-July when a heavy agricultural machine sparked flames near local livestock farms. Despite strict regulations prohibiting such activities due to fire risks, the machinery created sparks that ignited the blaze. Within days, the fire spread rapidly eastward and later southward into the Tiétar Valley, consuming vast stretches of forest, fields, and homes. Axel Mahlau, a German-Spanish man born in Spain, has been left devastated by the destruction of his botanical garden in the Tiétar Valley. The garden, once home to nearly 1,700 different plant species, was started by Mahlau's father in the 1950s and continued by Mahlau and his brother. After retiring three years ago, Mahlau dedicated himself to maintaining the garden, which covered nine hectares. Now, after being evacuated for a week, he returned to find everything reduced to ash. “Everything is burned,” he said sorrowfully. Smoke rises intermittently from the charred earth, marking the site of his lifelong project. The fires have forced the evacuation of more than 90,000 people, many of whom were displaced to temporary shelters. For those who have returned, the landscape they face is unrecognizable, once vibrant villages now lie in a blackened wasteland. Mahlau found some comfort in knowing that his house and two buildings remained intact, along with his books, music, photos, and family portraits. He had released his animals, an ass, pigs, goats, and peacocks, before fleeing, and was relieved to find them alive upon returning. The fires originated from multiple points, including a car accident in San Martin de Valdeiglesias, 25 kilometers east of La Adrada, and another in Almorox in Toledo. These fires have merged into one massive inferno, consuming land almost equal in size to the city of Berlin. In response, the Spanish government declared a state of emergency and took charge of coordinating firefighting efforts. However, despite increased resources, officials acknowledge that this will not solve the problem entirely. Not everyone chose to flee. Javier Cuerva, a 55-year-old telecommunications worker from La Adrada, decided to stay behind with around 150 other residents to confront the fire directly. Initially, he did not think the fire would reach their area, but soon the flames appeared on the mountain ridges above 2,000 meters high. The wind carried the fire downward toward their village, first burning the grasslands at the peaks, then the shrubland below, followed by the forests, fields, and finally the homes. Residents describe the speed at which the fire advanced as terrifying. Many were caught off guard, unable to escape in time. The situation highlights the challenges faced by rural communities in dealing with increasingly frequent and severe wildfires, often exacerbated by human activity and environmental factors. As the fires continue to burn, authorities remain focused on containment and rescue operations, while affected individuals grapple with the loss of their homes, livelihoods, and cherished landscapes.
