Charmaine Hunzwi, a Zimbabwean-Australian community leader and creative director of Safe Space Media, has been vocal about the impact of The Polygamist. She noted that while she anticipated the show would resonate within the African context, the extent of its global reach surprised even her. “I knew it would be viral within the African context,” she said. “But to have this level of virality globally, no-one anticipated that, not even the production themselves.” Hunzwi has viewed all 22 episodes multiple times, describing the show as “absolute cinema” and expressing her belief that it represents a breakthrough for African storytelling. Hunzwi emphasized the importance of recognizing the talents of veteran African actors who have long contributed to local productions but lacked international exposure. “I grew up in Zimbabwe, where I would see predominantly Black productions,” she explained. “And a lot of the cast that are on The Polygamist are veteran actors who do exceptionally well. They just never had any international recognition. So, to see them getting … their well-overdue flowers [is] absolutely amazing.” She pointed out that many African stories are often told through the lens of Western filmmakers, casting non-African actors despite the availability of skilled local talent. Hunzwi believes that the success of The Polygamist highlights the potential for African storytelling to gain global attention and appreciation. “We’ve loved K-drama,” she said. “K-drama is very popular here, but it’s also getting people to know that, well, African storytelling is also equally as good, even more salacious, and [can be] more dramatic.” She argued that the show serves as a powerful example of how African narratives, complete with African casts, production, and language, can achieve broad appeal. “What The Polygamist has proven is that a story can be African, with African cast, African production, African narrative, everything African, and you will still have global appeal,” she added. Hunzwi also highlighted the significance of the show for the Australian entertainment industry, suggesting that it could serve as a model for future projects. “The popularity of The Polygamist also opens doors for creatives here in Australia for them to use The Polygamist as a case study on [how] an Afrocentric or Black-centric narrative can still have commercial appeal, both locally and internationally.” Her comments reflect a growing awareness of the value of diverse storytelling and the potential for cross-cultural collaboration in the global entertainment landscape.
