The United Nations human rights office has issued a warning about escalating violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, marking a sharp increase in attacks that have resulted in multiple fatalities this year. According to recent data, 18 Palestinians have been killed in incidents linked to settler violence so far in 2026, surpassing the total number recorded throughout 2025. This surge follows a deadly clash near the Palestinian village of Tal, southwest of Nablus, where Major Yuval Ezra, 27, an artillery corps battery commander, and Sergeant-Major (ret.) Benyahu Mellet, 32, a member of Gilad Farm’s local security team, were killed. The incident occurred after a group of Israeli civilians entered Palestinian Authority-controlled territory and clashed with local residents. The conflict escalated when a Palestinian reportedly seized a rifle and opened fire during the confrontation. Palestinian officials confirmed four fatalities in the broader incident, though the exact circumstances surrounding their deaths are still under investigation. Ravina Shamdasani, the spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, condemned the actions of settlers and Israeli security forces, stating that they frequently collaborate in attacking local communities, assaulting families, destroying and confiscating property, and burning mosques. The UN has highlighted that settler violence and efforts resembling ongoing annexation of Palestinian territory have worsened over the past two years. This comes in the wake of a July 2024 ruling by the International Court of Justice, which declared Israel’s occupation of the West Bank unlawful and called for its withdrawal. Israel rejected the court’s decision, labeling it as fundamentally wrong and one-sided. Since the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023, violence in the West Bank has significantly increased, with the UN, human rights organizations, and Palestinian officials documenting a notable rise in settler attacks. Earlier in July, Israel’s security cabinet approved NIS 1.3 billion to establish 34 new settlements, a move backed by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who advocates for the full annexation of the West Bank. However, UN bodies, Palestinians, and most countries consider these settlements illegal under international law, a position Israel disputes, citing biblical and historical ties to the land. Approximately 700,000 Israeli settlers reside alongside 2.7 million Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The situation has become increasingly tense as Israeli politicians prioritize electoral considerations over addressing the issue of settler violence. Nablus Governor Ghassan Douglas accused the Israeli government of being reluctant to take stringent measures against radical settlers due to upcoming Knesset elections in October. He suggested that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz aim to appease voters who support the settlers, thus avoiding confrontations with them. Douglas emphasized that the violence in Tell, south of Nablus, was a result of settlers entering the village and provoking clashes. Following the incident, Israeli forces intensified their presence in the region through raids, increased checkpoints, arrests, and counter-terrorism measures. Palestinian sources indicated that attacks by extremist settlers have grown more frequent, involving raids on villages, abuse of residents, intimidation, and destruction of property. The escalation of violence has raised concerns among local residents, who warn that the situation could deteriorate further. They argue that neither side is willing to impose meaningful restrictions on those responsible for the attacks. Instead, Palestinians face heightened restrictions and crackdowns, which they believe exacerbate tensions rather than alleviate them. One resident questioned the rationale behind settlers choosing to visit Palestinian villages, suggesting that such actions are designed to provoke responses that can be used to justify further aggression. As the conflict continues to unfold, the international community faces mounting pressure to intervene and address the growing crisis in the West Bank. The UN’s warnings underscore the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life and ensure compliance with international legal standards.
