Turudić o novoj akciji Uskoka: 'Imamo jedan veliki predmet, uključena je i nacionalna sigurnost'

Ivan Turudić, head of the Croatian Intelligence Service (USKOK), confirmed during an appearance on RTL Danas that the agency has recently conducted several operations targeting known individuals, with one large operation involving national security interests currently underway. He described the operation as “sofisticated” and emphasized that while there have been multiple actions in recent weeks, the frequency has slowed slightly. Turudić declined to provide specific details, stating that the case involves “one sophisticated method of committing criminal acts.” Turudić also addressed the ongoing legal battle surrounding Vedran Pavlek, who remains in Kazakhstan and is awaiting a decision on his extradition to Croatia. He noted that Pavlek continues to challenge the extradition through legal means under Kazakh law, though he expressed confidence that the process will eventually conclude with Pavlek being returned to Croatia within a foreseeable timeframe. Meanwhile, the state prosecutor’s office is reviewing materials gathered during the investigation, including mobile phones, computers, and approximately 120,000 documents. Turudić acknowledged the scale of the task, noting that only a fraction of the work has been completed so far. Another case drawing public attention is the illegal dumping of waste in Lika, which has led to environmental concerns. Turudić stated that the case is currently in the investigation phase and that efforts have been made to create fabricated evidence at the Faculty of Geotechnics. He revealed that the fabricated evidence spans around 300 pages and criticized its quality, describing the area as “contaminated.” He added that there is a possibility this fabricated evidence could be released before the case reaches court, citing public interest in understanding the extent of contamination in the region. Turudić also commented on the situation at the Costabella beach, which is leased to a private residence and now charges entry fees. He admitted that the exact nature of these charges, whether they apply to visitors entering via the hotel property or directly into the hotel, is unclear. He stressed that all aspects of the situation would be investigated thoroughly, dismissing speculation about potential beneficiaries. He further responded to incidents of hooliganism during a football match between Varaždina and Hajduk. Turudić argued that the severity of penalties was less important than ensuring that punishments were clear and swift. He pointed out that sanctions in both criminal and administrative proceedings in Croatia are often too slow, leading to delays in addressing such violations. He also mentioned that USKOK had visited Hajduk and conducted an inspection, emphasizing that their role is to investigate and determine the true circumstances of each case. In concluding his remarks, Turudić referenced the annual European Commission report on Croatia’s adherence to the rule of law, placing the country in 12th position. He called this achievement “excellent,” noting that such a ranking had not been achieved prior to Croatia’s accession to the European Union. The report highlights progress in judicial independence and other key indicators, reflecting broader improvements in the country’s governance structures.
