Tourists visiting Croatia this summer are facing unexpectedly high parking costs, with some fees surpassing the price of a meal or even a night's accommodation. The situation has sparked frustration among visitors, particularly in popular coastal towns where parking rates have surged dramatically during the peak season. In Dubrovnik, one of Croatia’s most iconic destinations, parking within the historic city walls can cost up to €20 per hour, with additional hours priced at €10 each. This steep pricing has left many tourists questioning whether it is more economical to stay in nearby accommodations rather than pay for parking in the heart of the city. A French tourist named Thomas expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that the cost was “too high” and prompting him to move forward quickly to avoid further expenses. The high prices extend beyond Dubrovnik. In the town of Trogir, parking near the old city wall costs €10 per hour during July and August, while other areas offer lower rates ranging from €3 to €5 per hour. However, finding an available spot remains a challenge. One visitor from Đurđevci paid €40 for just over three hours of parking, while a Dutch tourist noted that €55 for five hours was “completely crazy.” Not all locals share the same perspective on these charges. Ante, a resident of Trogir, argued that €10 per hour within the old town was actually reasonable compared to other areas, such as across the pedestrian bridge, which costs only €3 per hour. In Split, parking on the Old Square runs at €5 per hour, while in Pula, street parking near the arena costs €3 per hour, with slightly higher rates at nearby lots at €4 per hour. Outside of the main tourist season, parking becomes significantly cheaper, typically costing just €1 per hour. Despite the high costs, some tourists find the prices acceptable given their proximity to major attractions. A visitor from Vienna remarked that paying €8 for two hours near the arena was “acceptable,” considering the location’s appeal. However, the primary issue for many is not just the cost but the scarcity of available spots. In most Adriatic cities, finding a free parking space during the summer months is nearly impossible, leading to increased frustration among visitors. To mitigate these challenges, online portals advising travelers recommend checking parking costs and locations before arriving. Many opt to park farther away and use public transport or walk into the city center instead. This approach helps reduce both financial strain and the stress of searching for a spot in crowded urban areas. As the summer season continues, the high parking fees remain a contentious topic among both tourists and residents. While some see them as necessary to manage congestion and preserve historical sites, others argue they deter visitors who might otherwise contribute to the local economy. With no immediate signs of relief, the debate over parking costs is likely to persist throughout the busy season.
