President Donald Trump pledged U.S. assistance to Lebanon during a meeting with its president, Joseph Aoun, at the White House on Tuesday. However, Trump offered no clear timeline for Israeli troop withdrawals from southern Lebanon, despite ongoing Israeli military presence in the region. Israeli forces have maintained their occupation of parts of southern Lebanon since March, with no official announcement of a withdrawal. During the meeting, Trump stated that Israel was “in the process of doing that” and “in the process of redeploying.” This claim contradicts reports indicating that Israel has not withdrawn from any territory it controls. On Monday, the U.S. State Department announced the creation of the first “pilot zone” under a Lebanon-Israel framework, intended to allow Lebanese troops to enter previously occupied towns and remove Hezbollah military presence before reconstruction efforts can commence. However, the three towns designated for this initiative were not under Israeli control, meaning Israel had not vacated them. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed gratitude toward Trump for the U.S.-brokered framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, which ties Israeli withdrawal to Hezbollah's disarmament. Aoun praised the agreement as a step toward ending the “state of hostility” between the two nations. Despite these diplomatic gestures, Aoun did not address Israeli actions against Lebanon, including systematic destruction of villages in the south. Israeli officials have publicly acknowledged the goal of eliminating Lebanese border towns. Since the outbreak of the regional conflict earlier this year, Israel has killed over 4,000 people in Lebanon, including numerous medical personnel and journalists. In his remarks, Trump referred to Lebanon as having been “badly treated” for decades but gave no further explanation. He vowed to provide substantial aid, stating, “We’re going to help it a lot.” The U.S. president also reiterated his call for Syrian intervention in Lebanon to assist in disarming Hezbollah, a proposal consistently rebuffed by Syrian leaders. Syria’s current government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, emerged from the Syrian civil war as a rebel commander. Al-Sharaa previously led the al-Qaeda-linked faction in the conflict, while Hezbollah supported President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Trump expressed admiration for al-Sharaa, claiming he had “pulled Syria together” and suggested that al-Sharaa might engage with Hezbollah to resolve tensions. This remark drew mixed reactions, given the complex historical relationship between Syria and Lebanon. During the meeting, a Lebanese journalist asked Trump about specific forms of U.S. support for Lebanon. The president responded with vague assurances, saying, “You’ll find out.” Trump also indicated openness to direct dialogue with Hezbollah, stating, “I would speak to Hezbollah. I speak to everybody.” While emphasizing his willingness to engage with all parties, Trump did not specify how such talks would proceed or what outcomes could be expected. As the meeting concluded, the lack of clarity regarding Israeli troop movements and the absence of a defined plan for Lebanon’s recovery left many questions unanswered. With Israel continuing its military operations in the south and Hezbollah maintaining a strategic position, the situation remains volatile. The U.S. commitment to aiding Lebanon appears conditional upon broader geopolitical considerations, raising concerns about the effectiveness and sincerity of American involvement in resolving the crisis.
