Former Representative Cori Bush lost her bid for re-election in Missouri to Wesley Bell, while in Washington state, moderate Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez advanced to the general election alongside Republican state Senator John Braun, defeating progressive Brent Hennrich in a non-partisan top-two primary. These outcomes highlight the internal divisions within the Democratic Party and raise questions about the effectiveness of progressive strategies in competitive races. Political analysts suggest that the success of progressive candidates in November will depend largely on their ability to attract independent voters and disillusioned Republicans. John Geer, a professor of political science at Vanderbilt University, noted that while progressives have demonstrated strength in 2026, translating that into general election victories requires broadening their appeal beyond the party’s base. A July 24–31 EPIC-MRA/MIRS poll showed Rogers leading 46 percent to 43 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. Another poll conducted July 28–29 by MIRS/Mitchell Research found the candidates tied at 45 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.77 percentage points. RealClearPolling averages place Rogers slightly ahead at 44.3 percent compared to El-Sayed’s 44 percent. These figures underscore the uncertainty surrounding the outcome and the potential impact of late-stage campaigning. Meanwhile, the political landscape is shifting due to developments involving President Trump. Recent setbacks, including the Justice Department dropping a major vandalism case and the scrapping of a $1.8 billion compensation fund, have raised concerns about the administration’s stability. Analysts warn that these developments could benefit Democrats in the midterms, particularly in states where voter dissatisfaction with the president could translate into support for opposing candidates. However, the White House maintains that the administration remains focused on economic policies and foreign relations, dismissing concerns about its political standing.
