Alleged Scattered Spider hacker arrested in Finland

A 19-year-old dual US-Estonian national named Peter Stokes has been arrested in Finland and extradited to the United States, where he faces charges related to his alleged involvement with the Scattered Spider hacking group. The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) stated that Stokes was charged with computer intrusion, conspiracy, and fraud following years of investigative work. Scattered Spider is accused of orchestrating cyberattacks that have resulted in over $100 million in ransom payments. The charges against Stokes follow the plea deals of two individuals linked to a 2024 cyberattack on Transport for London, which affected approximately 10 million people. The DoJ noted that Stokes and others allegedly demanded $8 million in cryptocurrency from a jewelry retailer after stealing its data, though the company did not pay the ransom but incurred at least $2 million in losses. The FBI, along with Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, collaborated on the case.

‘Truly international’ network of drug-facilitated rape uncovered by UK crime agency

UK criminal investigators have revealed an 'international network' of organized drug-facilitated sexual assault, where victims are sedated before being raped or abused. The National Crime Agency (NCA) identified over 270 individuals linked to online forums used to plan such crimes, with intelligence shared with law enforcement globally. Deputy Director Nigel Leary emphasized the growing organization of these offenses, noting discussions among perpetrators about using drugs, filming assaults, and avoiding detection. The NCA reported at least 14 domestic investigations and the protection of eight survivors. The case highlights the broader issue of underreported and under-detected crimes, with examples like the Gisèle Pelicot case in France, where her ex-husband was convicted of drugging and raping her over a decade.
