Seven tribal children from Rajasthan's Udaipur district, aged between seven and 12 years, were recently returned to their home state after being intercepted in Goa during an alleged attempt to traffic them to Tamil Nadu. Officials stated the children had been taken from their villages on July 15 and transported via bus to Gujarat’s Ahmedabad before continuing by train to Goa. The railway police intervened following reports of a large group of children traveling together, leading to their interception and subsequent return to Rajasthan. A joint team comprising members of the Udaipur Child Welfare Committee and the Udaipur Police traveled to Goa upon receiving information from local authorities. The children are currently undergoing questioning in the presence of their parents and village elders. According to Yashoda Paniya, an executive member of the Udaipur Child Welfare Committee, the children will only be reunited with their families once the ongoing inquiry is complete. No formal charges have yet been filed, as the investigation continues. Authorities are examining whether a broader trafficking network exists within Rajasthan’s tribal regions. Paniya mentioned that investigators are looking into reports indicating that more than 15 children from the Udaipur division might have been similarly sent to Tamil Nadu in previous instances. The inquiry aims to determine the extent of this potential network and its operations. Mannalal Rawat, a member of parliament representing Udaipur for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has written to both Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting a high-level probe into the incident. In his letter, Rawat urged the formation of a Special Investigation Team involving agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau, the National Investigation Agency, and the Central Bureau of Investigation. Rawat raised concerns about an alleged interstate network targeting impoverished and tribal communities by offering false promises of free education and employment opportunities. He pointed to past incidents in Udaipur, Dungarpur, Kalinjara in Banswara, Kanod, and other tribal areas of southern Rajasthan. These claims suggest a pattern of exploitation aimed at facilitating religious conversions. Rawat highlighted the role of political rhetoric surrounding religious conversion and the identity of tribal populations, asserting that such discourse exacerbates social divisions and communal tensions. He emphasized the need for an unbiased examination of all facets of the case, including the possible involvement of organized groups, non-governmental organizations, interstate networks, and financial connections. His call for stringent legal measures against those found responsible underscores the gravity of the situation. Police have not officially confirmed the existence of an organized interstate religious conversion network. They indicated that the current phase of the investigation is preliminary, with authorities examining all relevant factors, including how the children were removed from Rajasthan. Until conclusive evidence emerges, no definitive conclusions can be made regarding the scope or nature of the alleged activities. The case has sparked renewed interest in the vulnerabilities faced by tribal communities and the challenges associated with inter-state child trafficking. As the investigation progresses, further details may emerge that could shed light on the motivations behind these actions and the effectiveness of existing safeguards designed to protect vulnerable populations.
