Late spring conditions and looming U.S. tariffs have created a difficult environment for beekeepers in Canada’s Prairie provinces, threatening both their livelihoods and the broader agricultural sector. The timing of these challenges comes at a critical juncture for honey producers, who are already grappling with reduced yields due to delayed seasonal patterns. With the possibility of a 50 percent tariff on Canadian honey set to take effect on August 19, industry leaders warn that the situation could worsen significantly before the end of the season. Simon Lalonde, president of the Saskatchewan Beekeepers Development Commission, described the current season as one of the most challenging in recent years. He explained that the delayed spring affected the growth of bee populations, leading to fewer foragers collecting nectar from canola fields and other flowering plants. “The queens didn’t lay as many eggs as fast,” Lalonde said. “That resulted in fewer bees for this time of year than we normally see.” This reduction in workforce has led to lower-than-usual honey production, with most beekeepers expecting only an average yield this year. The uncertainty surrounding the final outcome of the season adds another layer of difficulty. Lalonde noted that the weather over the remaining months of summer could still influence the overall harvest. “We don’t really know until early September when all the honey is in the barrels where the season ends up,” he said. This unpredictability makes planning and financial forecasting particularly tough for beekeepers who rely heavily on consistent output. In addition to environmental factors, the prospect of U.S. tariffs poses a serious economic threat. Honey, along with several other products, was recently removed from the list of items exempt under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement (CUSMA). Lalonde expressed concerns about the implications of this move, noting that the United States is a key export destination for Canadian honey. “Our biggest concern is, we really only have three markets for our Canadian honey,” he said. “It either stays domestic within Canada, it goes to the U.S., or Japan.” With the U.S. market potentially closed off, Lalonde estimated that approximately 15 to 20 percent of Canada’s honey crop, primarily from the Prairies, could face disruption. “Losing the U.S. market basically means an extra 20 percent of Canadian honey either staying in Japan or trying to find those new markets,” he added. However, he emphasized that the volume of Canadian honey exported to the U.S., about two percent of total consumption, would not significantly affect American beekeepers. “This isn’t a major concern for U.S. beekeepers; it’s not as if Canadian honey is flooding the U.S. market and resulting in lower prices to them.” Despite these challenges, Lalonde remains optimistic about the ability of Canadian negotiators to address the issue. He expressed hope that a resolution might emerge in the coming weeks, though he acknowledged the urgency of finding alternative solutions. In the meantime, he encouraged consumers to support local beekeepers by purchasing honey directly from known sources. “It doesn’t take very much extra honey to show support to those local beekeepers,” he said. The combination of environmental and economic pressures highlights the vulnerability of the beekeeping industry in the Prairies. As the season progresses, the outcomes of both the weather and ongoing trade negotiations will determine whether beekeepers can recover from this difficult period. For now, the focus remains on adapting to the immediate challenges while hoping for clarity on the future of international trade policies.
