No other animals at the zoo displayed signs of illness, though staff have been monitoring them more closely. An official at Tama Zoo stated that public viewing of the lions was suspended on July 23 as their condition deteriorated. The zoo has continued efforts to treat the affected animals, including water-spraying and administering medication via intravenous drips. The extreme weather conditions saw temperatures in the area reach nearly 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit) in mid- to late July, prompting heatstroke warnings. Experts noted that lions are native to sub-Saharan Africa, where they are adapted to arid and hot climates. However, Tokyo's climate combines intense heat with high humidity, making it challenging for the animals to regulate their body temperature effectively. This environmental mismatch likely contributed to the health crisis among the lion population. The zoo has taken steps to manage the situation, implementing stricter care protocols and limiting public access to the enclosures housing the affected animals.
