Melbourne defeated Hawthorn 34-27 in a tightly contested AFLW clash at Ikon Park on Friday evening. Despite the loss, the Hawks secured two notable moments in the match, including a goal from Aine McDonagh and a strong performance from Jacqui Dupuy. The game saw several key players shine, with Melbourne's Kate Hore dominating proceedings in the first quarter. At the final whistle, Melbourne led 34 to 27, with the scoreline reflecting a competitive contest throughout. In the second quarter, McDonagh capitalized on a free kick to boot her second goal, putting pressure on the Hawks. Her ability to find the scoreboard highlighted her growing reputation as a standout performer in the league. Meanwhile, Jacinta Hose of Melbourne left the field after sustaining an ankle injury during a ball-up, though it appeared to be less severe than previous injuries she has faced. In the second term, Kate Hore continued to make an impact for Melbourne, despite the Hawks' efforts to contain her. Commentator Kate McCarthy criticized Hawthorn for failing to provide adequate defensive coverage against Hore, stating that someone from the Hawks should take responsibility for marking her more effectively. Hore's influence was evident as she contributed significantly to Melbourne's attacking efforts, with four score involvements already recorded by the midpoint of the match. Jacqui Dupuy, making her debut for the Hawks after joining from the Gold Coast Suns during the off-season, impressed with her strong hands and composure under pressure. Although she missed a scoring opportunity, her presence added depth to the Hawks' lineup. Neither team managed to score in the second term, but both sides created multiple chances, indicating a balanced contest. The first quarter saw Melbourne establish dominance, with Maggie Mahony and Mia Austin each scoring twice. Mahony's quick thinking and accurate finishing helped set the tone for the Demons, while Austin's first goal as a Demon showcased her potential. The Hawks responded with a goal from Poppy Stockwell, marking her debut for the club. However, the Hawks struggled to keep pace with Melbourne's intensity, particularly in the face of Hore's relentless performances. As the game progressed, the Hawks found themselves trailing significantly, with Melbourne maintaining control of the match. The final score underscored Melbourne's superior performance, although the Hawks managed to secure two memorable highlights that will be remembered by fans and analysts alike.
