Tanzania has charged 61 individuals with terrorism following arrests made in early July, according to the opposition party Chadema. The charges come amid ongoing tensions over planned protests, which authorities say were linked to criminal activity. Chadema confirmed that these individuals were among those arrested during a crackdown on demonstrations, and that additional suspects remain under investigation. The arrests began on July 9, just two days after a planned demonstration was thwarted. Police stated they had detained 130 people suspected of organizing or inciting criminal acts through messages related to the protest. According to Chadema's legal representative, Rugemeleza Nshala, 61 of those arrested have now been formally charged with terrorism. Most of these individuals are reportedly members of Chadema, though the party denies endorsing such actions. He warned that equating legitimate political expression with terrorist acts could have serious implications for freedom of assembly in Tanzania. Chadema’s leader, Tundu Lissu, has been incarcerated since April 2025 on treason charges. Meanwhile, police have confirmed charging 36 individuals with planning disturbances and violence, including attempts to damage infrastructure or attack police officers. The demonstrations in question took place on July 7, a national holiday commemorating the founding of the Tanganyika African National Union (Tanu) by Julius Nyerere in 1954. Violent confrontations erupted again on October 29, the day of Tanzania’s general election, when widespread protests arose due to concerns over the perceived inevitability of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s victory. The election saw her securing 98 percent of the vote, a result that many viewed as predetermined. Following her assumption of office after the sudden death of former president John Magufuli in 2021, there were initial hopes for a return to democratic practices. However, these expectations were quickly tempered by continued restrictions on civil liberties. An official inquiry into the October 29 violence concluded that 518 people lost their lives, although the report did not assign responsibility. Opposition groups and human rights organizations, however, claim that approximately 2,000 individuals were killed by security forces during the suppression of the protests. These discrepancies highlight the complex nature of the situation and the challenges faced by independent observers seeking to document the true scale of the conflict.
