In Ljubljana, citizens are increasingly seeking relief from the summer heat, according to a recent survey conducted by the non-profit urbanist studio Prostorož. The survey, which is still ongoing and open until the end of August, aims to identify cooler areas within the city that residents frequent during hot weather. Participants have highlighted a need for more fountains, shaded cycling paths, improved public transportation during peak seasons, and additional short-term cooling measures. Some respondents even suggested transforming parts of the city into a river for recreational purposes. The issue of extreme summer temperatures has become more pressing in recent years, with higher-than-usual heatwaves affecting both the environment and public health. Prostorož, in collaboration with Sensemo, has installed eight temperature sensors around the University Clinical Center of Ljubljana and the Oncology Institute, allowing real-time monitoring of temperature and air humidity changes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address urban heat issues and improve quality of life in the city. Participants in the survey were asked to indicate which green spaces they visit most often during hot days. The majority of responses pointed to locations such as Tivoli Park, Rožnik, and Šišenski Hrib as the most frequently visited cool spots. However, the data collected thus far does not yet represent the entire population of Ljubljana, as the survey was primarily distributed through information stands in the city center and near the University Clinical Center. As a result, the findings may not fully reflect the preferences of all residents. One notable finding is that many residents prefer to stay home during extremely hot days, either using air conditioning or simply remaining indoors. Surprisingly, a large number of respondents indicated that they leave the city altogether when the weather becomes too hot. This response has raised concerns among researchers, who believe it should prompt local authorities to take further action to make the city more livable during heatwaves. Other suggestions from participants include the creation of more shaded bike routes and additional rest areas throughout the city. These features are seen as essential for encouraging outdoor activity while maintaining comfort. Some respondents also emphasized the importance of accessible water stations, particularly along green spaces, to help mitigate the effects of high temperatures. While some respondents expressed support for new developments in public spaces, others voiced concerns about potential disruptions to existing areas. For example, two respondents mentioned that they would prefer not to see new interventions in the space of Ljubljanski Grad and Golovec, suggesting that these historic sites should remain untouched. The survey results highlight a growing awareness among Ljubljančani of the challenges posed by rising temperatures and the need for adaptive urban planning. With the final analysis of the survey data expected in the fall, the findings could inform future policies aimed at making Ljubljana more resilient to climate change. Until then, the discussion continues, driven by the voices of its residents who seek ways to enjoy their city even in the hottest months.
