Somali pirates have launched a renewed assault on commercial shipping in the Gulf of Aden, seizing at least 13 vessels since the beginning of the year, marking the highest number of attacks in over a decade. The surge coincides with heightened tensions stemming from the ongoing US-Iran war, which has disrupted key maritime routes and diverted international attention away from piracy concerns in the region. Two cargo ships were taken by pirates within four days last week, prompting unprecedented drone strikes against suspected pirate operations. The situation has reignited fears about security along critical trade corridors, particularly in the Horn of Africa, where maritime routes play a vital role in global commerce. The escalating threat began with the seizure of the Cameroon-flagged MV Lutuf off the coast of Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region on 17 August. Days later, pirates boarded the Eritrean-flagged MT Sibu 1 near Yemen, highlighting the expanding reach of pirate activity beyond Somalia’s immediate waters. These incidents have intensified local unrest, with reports indicating that 13 individuals linked to the pirate network responsible for the MV Lutuf were killed in two drone strikes conducted by local authorities starting on 18 August. Although no official claim has been made regarding the attacks, local officials have attributed them to Turkey, citing the vessel’s alleged possession of Turkish weaponry. The MV Lutuf is now among six vessels currently held by pirates, with four of them reportedly anchored near Bander Beyla, a known hub for pirate activity. While the current level of piracy does not yet match the peak of 2011, when over 200 attacks occurred and hundreds of sailors were held hostage, the recent uptick suggests a growing risk. Experts note that although coordinated international naval efforts and private security measures significantly reduced piracy in the past few years, underlying issues such as poverty, weak governance, and environmental degradation in Somalia have persisted, allowing pirate networks to remain active despite their diminished scale. Local factors contributing to the resurgence include resentment toward foreign fishing vessels operating in Somali waters, which are accused of depleting fish stocks and undermining the livelihoods of coastal communities. This discontent has fueled new recruitment and support for pirate groups. Additionally, the diversion of commercial shipping routes southward, as vessels seek to avoid conflicts in the northern straits controlled by the US and Iran, has created more opportunities for pirates. With fewer patrols and more targets, the financial incentives for piracy have increased, particularly given the high value of oil transported through these routes. Analysts suggest that the combination of reduced naval presence and increased commercial traffic has created a perfect storm for pirate activity. “You have that combined effect of less naval patrolling but more commercial shipping in these waters,” explains Omar Mahmood, a senior Somalia analyst for the International Crisis Group. “And that signals an opportunity.” Once a successful attack occurs, it often encourages others to follow suit, leading to a cycle of increasing incidents. There is also speculation about potential links between Somali pirates and Yemen-based actors, including the Houthi rebels. However, Mahmood cautions that such collaborations are more likely to involve criminal elements rather than state-backed groups. One of the recently seized vessels, the MT Sibu 1, is believed to have connections to an Iranian “shadow fleet,” raising questions about the broader geopolitical implications of the piracy crisis. As the situation continues to evolve, the challenge remains not just in combating piracy, but in addressing the root causes that sustain it.
