The report criticized the museum for not presenting a unified and inspiring version of American history, particularly during the 250th anniversary of American independence. President Donald Trump has been leading a nationwide initiative aimed at reshaping how American history is presented in cultural institutions under federal influence. This includes efforts to remove diversity, equity, and inclusion components from historical narratives. Historians have expressed concern over these changes, viewing them as potentially damaging to accurate historical representation. Hartig emphasized that the museum does not align itself with political debates and aims to present an evolving view of American history that includes diverse perspectives. She stated that the goal is to add new voices and evidence to existing narratives rather than erase them. The museum recently launched an exhibit titled "In Pursuit of Life, Liberty and Happiness," which features 250 artifacts celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence. Among the items displayed are the desk used by Thomas Jefferson to draft the Declaration of Independence, a Revolutionary War-era gunboat, and the Star Spangled Banner. The White House report accused the museum of failing to celebrate the nation and its history adequately. It pointed out that the museum had not created any exhibit dedicated to presenting a general narrative of American history or highlighting key figures such as the Founding Fathers, the Second Continental Congress, the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolutionary War, or the establishment of the constitutional rule of law. Republican members of the committee echoed similar sentiments, expressing concerns about the museum's approach to historical storytelling. Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee claimed that the museum's exhibits reflect a broader ideological stance, suggesting that they focus too much on themes of oppression and marginalization. He referred to the museum's content as "woke exhibits." Representative Michael Cloud of Texas acknowledged that the museum does display relevant materials related to the 250th anniversary but noted that finding information about the Declaration of Independence could be difficult. He suggested that such references should be more prominently featured. Hartig faced specific questions regarding an exhibit titled "Girlhood (It's Complicated)," which included a diary from a 13-year-old exploring topics such as gender identity. The museum director defended the exhibit, emphasizing its educational value and relevance to contemporary discussions about identity and personal experience. The controversy surrounding the museum highlights a larger debate about how American history should be taught and represented. While the White House and certain lawmakers advocate for a more traditional narrative focusing on national achievements and unity, the museum seeks to incorporate a wider range of perspectives and experiences into its exhibitions.
