A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officer in Maharashtra was cornered and forced to consume expired biscuits during an ongoing investigation into bribery allegations, according to local reports. The incident occurred amid intensified efforts by the Maharashtra FDA to crack down on food safety violations across the state. The officer was reportedly subjected to this act as part of an internal probe into suspected corruption within the regulatory body. The situation escalated following a major raid conducted by the Maharashtra FDA and Turbhe police in Navi Mumbai on August 24. During the operation, authorities uncovered evidence of widespread tampering with food product labels, including the alteration of expiry dates and nutritional information. The findings have sparked concern over the integrity of the food supply chain in the region. The raid revealed the presence of chemicals used to erase original expiry dates and machinery designed to print new labels. These tools were allegedly employed to alter the dates on food products intended for overseas markets. Goods valued at approximately Rs 75.21 lakh were seized, and actions were initiated against 12 individuals connected to the operation. The products identified included well-known brands such as Lay’s, Kurkure, Maggi noodles, Knorr soup, Hellmann’s mayonnaise, Thums Up, and Limca. Tukaram Mundhe, the head of the Maharashtra FDA, expressed his shock at the scale of the operation, describing it as systematic and organized. He emphasized the need for greater accountability throughout the food supply chain. The investigation also uncovered instances where future manufacturing dates were allegedly printed on products, indicating a deliberate attempt to mislead consumers and regulators alike. In addition to altering expiry dates, officials discovered that nutritional and ingredient labels had been manipulated to comply with foreign market standards. For example, a Nestle Maggi noodle package was found with a counterfeit nutrition label that falsely indicated the product was made in India. Similarly, a PepsiCo Kurkure packet featured a bilingual English-French label that adjusted the quantities of ingredients and modified calorie and serving size information to align with international regulations. The warehouse, which was allegedly managed by privately owned Sadhana Enterprises, contained nearly 5,000 cartons of popular consumer products. Although the exact destinations for these products remain unclear, some of the replacement labels were printed in multiple languages, suggesting an intent to target specific international markets. The incident involving the FDA officer highlights the broader challenges faced by regulatory bodies in ensuring compliance with food safety standards. As investigations continue, authorities are examining the potential links between the warehouse and other entities involved in the distribution of these products. The findings underscore the importance of maintaining rigorous oversight to prevent such fraudulent practices from undermining public health and consumer trust. Meanwhile, separate inspections in Hyderabad have uncovered similar issues, with officials reporting violations at seven popular restaurants. These included poor hygiene practices, expired food items, non-compliance with food labeling and display regulations, and the presence of pests.
