A public swimming pool in Salurn, South Tyrol, has introduced a special hour for Muslim women, sparking debate across Italy. The Lido, which will offer this dedicated time starting next week, allows Muslim women from the surrounding area to swim during Monday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., after regular operating hours. During this period, wearing a burkini is explicitly permitted. This initiative marks a new step in accommodating religious practices within public facilities. The burkini, a full-body swimsuit that covers all parts of the body except the face, hands, and feet, aligns with the dress code of many Muslim women. The facility’s operator, Luca Lechthaler, described the special opening as a contribution to greater inclusion and part of the responsibilities of a publicly operated swimming pool. He noted that similar opportunities would also be available to other groups outside regular hours. Local authorities have expressed mixed responses. Mayor Roland Lazzeri stated that the operator could independently decide on such additional services, emphasizing the goal of making the pool accessible to as many residents as possible, including those who might not use it during normal times. However, Silvia Sardone, deputy leader of the right-wing governing party Lega, called the initiative “absurd.” She argued that it promotes segregation rather than integration, suggesting that separating men and women and allowing the wearing of burkinis during specific hours institutionalizes gender separation and community division. Similar criticism came from the South Tyrol-based Free List, which is part of the regional government. They claimed such regulations promote a concept of femininity based on suppression, veiling, and coercion. Roland Stauder, head of the Free List, viewed the measure as another sign of failed integration policies. He accused left-leaning and feminist groups of downplaying problematic developments related to political Islam while being more critical of local men. In contrast, Julia Unterberger, a senator from the ruling South Tyrol People's Party (SVP), praised the initiative as a gesture of sensitivity and social inclusion. She highlighted that the measure enables women who might otherwise avoid the pool to leave their homes, meet others, engage in sports, and access public spaces. Unterberger emphasized that the initiative does not isolate these women from society but instead provides them with an added opportunity to participate in communal life. She stressed that emancipation occurs through increased freedom and participation rather than exclusion. This controversy reflects broader tensions around cultural and religious accommodations in public spaces. While some see the measure as a positive step toward inclusivity, others argue it reinforces divisions. As discussions continue, the situation underscores the complex interplay between individual rights, community norms, and policy decisions in multicultural settings.
