She had trusted the funeral director, whom she described as “sympathetic” and “respectful.” When she learned that Sunny’s remains were still in a brown envelope on the floor of the funeral home, despite expectations that they would have been cremated, she felt devastated. “I had to accept that he was still there, almost two years after the funeral.” The court proceedings will include statements from over 100 grieving relatives, many of whom plan to advocate for stricter regulations governing funeral directors. Currently, in England and Wales, there is no requirement for a license to operate as a funeral director. However, since March 2025, Scotland has implemented a code of conduct for the profession.
