Satellite imagery has confirmed the destruction of a Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber at the Engels-2 Air Base in the Saratov region, according to independent analysts and reports from Ukrainian officials. The incident occurred during a nighttime drone attack carried out by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU). This marks the first visual confirmation of such an attack’s success, with the wreckage clearly visible on satellite photos released by the open-source intelligence group AviVector. The footage shows the rear section of the bomber severely damaged, leading to a fire that destroyed the fuselage structure. The attack took place around midnight on July 16, following reports from residents of Saratov and Engels who witnessed explosions and a large number of drones in the sky. Local Russian Telegram channels also documented the incident, noting that a fire broke out near the military airfield shortly after. According to AviVector's analysis, the drone strike hit the rear part of the bomber, causing a fire that led to the complete destruction of its body. The rear portion of the aircraft was completely severed down to the internal compartment housing its cruise missiles. This incident represents a significant blow to Russia’s military infrastructure, particularly given the strategic importance of the Tu-95 bomber. These aircraft, which have been in service since the 1950s, serve as platforms for launching long-range cruise missiles like the Kh-101, which target Ukrainian cities beyond the reach of Ukrainian air defense systems. With production of the Tu-95 having ceased decades ago, repairing such extensive damage would be impractical and uneconomical, effectively removing the aircraft from operational use permanently. Engels-2 Air Base is one of only two primary bases from which Russia conducts long-range bombing campaigns. Following previous Ukrainian attacks, Moscow has taken measures to enhance security at the base, including constructing at least 17 reinforced shelters tailored for Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers. Additionally, efforts have been made to deceive Ukrainian drones and satellite imagery by drawing two-dimensional silhouettes of bombers on the runway. Despite these precautions, the latest attack resulted in the destruction of one aircraft, highlighting the vulnerability of even well-protected facilities. According to data from the Oryx project, which tracks confirmed losses based solely on photographic or video evidence, Russia has lost at least ten Tu-95MS bombers since the start of the invasion. Most of these losses have occurred on Russian airfields rather than in aerial combat, underscoring the effectiveness of Ukrainian drone attacks targeting stationary aircraft. The recent loss adds to this tally, further depleting Russia’s capacity for long-range missile strikes against Ukraine. The destruction of the Tu-95 bomber underscores the ongoing impact of Ukrainian countermeasures against Russian military assets. Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky previously announced that the SBU had targeted the bomber as part of a broader wave of long-range attacks. If confirmed, this would represent a major strategic victory for Ukraine, significantly reducing Russia’s ability to conduct sustained missile strikes from the Engels-2 base. The incident highlights the growing challenge faced by Russian forces in maintaining the operational readiness of their aging fleet amid continuous Ukrainian offensives.

Zašto činjenice (90): This article closely follows the primary source document, citing the satellite imagery from Planet Labs and AviVector, confirming the destruction of the Tu-95 bomber. It accurately attributes the event to the Ukrainian SBU and provides details about the extent of the damage, aligning with the origin
Zašto objektivnost (85): The article maintains a relatively neutral tone, focusing on the facts presented by the sources. However, it emphasizes the significance of the event as a 'major success' for Kyiv, which introduces a slight bias towards Ukrainian achievements.
