South Korea has announced its intention to initiate preparations for the 2029 Invictus Games, set to become the first such international sporting event for wounded service personnel and veterans to be hosted in Asia. The announcement was made by Veterans Minister Kwon Oh-eul during a policy briefing chaired by President Lee Jae Myung. The games are scheduled to take place from October 6 to 15, 2029, primarily at the Daejeon Convention Center and other locations in the city's Yuseong district. The South Korean government plans to create a special law and form an organizing committee by 2027 to ensure the successful execution of the event. According to Kwon, the central government will handle diplomatic coordination, while Daejeon will be responsible for providing venues and necessary infrastructure. Local authorities, veterans' organizations, and corporate sponsors are expected to play key roles in the planning process. Around 3,000 participants, including athletes, officials, and family members from 28 countries, are anticipated to attend the games, which will feature 12 sports such as sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and indoor rowing. In addition to preparing for the Invictus Games, the government has outlined several initiatives aimed at improving support for young veterans and service members who have been injured in action. One of these measures involves requiring public-sector employers to recognize military service time for purposes of calculating employee pay and seniority. Guidelines for implementing this policy are expected to be finalized by the end of this year, with the actual rollout planned for February 2027. The government also aims to adjust eligibility criteria for national youth programs so that individuals can qualify based on the duration of their military service, effectively extending the age limit for participation. Additionally, job transition allowances for service members with medium- and long-term service commitments will be increased. For injured personnel, the Veterans and Defense ministries plan to integrate their information systems to facilitate the sharing of medical records and offer comprehensive assistance ranging from treatment to veteran registration. Another proposed change allows injured service members to apply for veteran status at any stage of their service, rather than being restricted to applying within six months of discharge. As part of a broader initiative, the government intends to proactively identify eligible beneficiaries rather than relying solely on self-applications. This includes reaching out to unclaimed Korean War casualties and low-income veterans who may not be aware of existing benefits. The decision to host the Invictus Games in Daejeon reflects a growing emphasis on supporting veterans and wounded service members in South Korea. Officials emphasized collaboration with local governments, private enterprises, and civil society groups to build a robust foundation for the event. The city of Daejeon has already begun discussions regarding venue availability and infrastructure requirements, ensuring that the necessary facilities will be ready by 2029. The government’s commitment extends beyond the logistical aspects of hosting the games. By integrating military service into employment policies and expanding access to social services, South Korea seeks to address the unique challenges faced by veterans and injured service members.
