The innovation, led by Professor Andi Dirpan, introduces a multilayered film composed of polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) derived from fermented coconut water and infused with an oxygen-scavenging compound, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). This material aims to address the shortcomings of traditional plastics by offering improved durability and active oxygen management while remaining environmentally friendly. The research team utilized bacterial cellulose sourced from fermented coconut water, a method akin to producing 'nata de coco.' This approach yielded a high-purity cellulose that was processed into MCC powder and integrated into a three-layered PLA film. The BHT compound was strategically positioned in the inner layers to interact directly with the contents being packaged. Testing revealed that increasing the concentration of MCC significantly enhanced the mechanical strength of the film while reducing oxygen permeability. However, this improvement came with increased rigidity, affecting the material's flexibility. Microscopic examination indicated that the MCC obtained from coconut water produced a more consistent and defect-free structure compared to commercially available MCC. This structural advantage translated into better performance during oxygen permeability tests, where the modified film outperformed standard PLA. Additionally, the material demonstrated rapid biodegradation, with approximately 28.86% degradation observed over 25 days when buried in soil. These findings align with established benchmarks for biodegradable plastics, suggesting the material’s potential for widespread application. Despite these advantages, the study identified limitations. While the reinforced film exhibited greater stiffness and effective oxygen scavenging, it lacked the necessary elasticity to withstand typical handling conditions. This brittleness poses challenges for practical use, as packaging materials must endure various stresses during production, transportation, and storage. The balance between functional performance and physical resilience remains a critical area for further refinement. The choice of bacterial cellulose as a reinforcement agent highlights an innovative shift away from conventional sources like wood or agricultural crops. By leveraging the fermentation process familiar in food production, the researchers tapped into a renewable resource with superior structural qualities. This approach not only supports sustainability goals but also integrates existing industrial practices, potentially easing adoption among manufacturers. As the global demand for sustainable packaging solutions continues to rise, this breakthrough represents a step forward in addressing environmental concerns without compromising food safety or quality.
