Kišna sezona: TRACE upozorava vozače da ne voze na poplavljenim putevima

Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) je izdao upozorenja vozačima o opasnostima vožnje poplavljenim cestama tijekom kišne sezone.

Ogun State's Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has issued urgent warnings to motorists ahead of the rainy season, urging them to avoid driving through flooded roads and to take additional precautions to prevent accidents. The advisory was released in a statement issued on Friday by TRACE’s Public Relations Officer, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who emphasized the dangers posed by poor road conditions during the monsoon season. The warning comes amid reports of several road incidents linked to heavy rains. In related news, three people were killed in a road crash in Anambra state, and 21 died after a school bus overturned in Uganda. These tragic events have heightened concerns over road safety, particularly during periods of extreme weather. The Nigerian Senate recently passed legislation banning preaching and hawking in commercial buses, with fines up to N50,000 for violations, reflecting broader efforts to improve public transport safety. Akinbiyi highlighted that the rainy season brings challenges such as reduced visibility, slippery surfaces, and extended braking distances. He stressed the importance of maintaining a cautious approach, advising drivers to stay alert, slow down, and prioritize safe travel. The TRACE guide, titled “Safe and Responsible Driving… A MUST!”, outlines key recommendations for motorists, including regular vehicle inspections and adherence to traffic rules. The agency specifically cautioned against attempting to cross flooded roads, citing the risk of vehicles being swept away due to unpredictable water depths. Akinbiyi noted that even seemingly shallow streams can conceal hidden hazards, such as deep trenches or fast-moving currents. He urged drivers to seek alternative routes whenever possible and to avoid driving through areas where water covers the road surface. In addition to avoiding flooded roads, the statement recommended that drivers keep their vehicles in optimal condition. This includes checking brake functionality, tire pressure, windshield wiper performance, and battery health. Drivers were also advised to switch on their headlights during rain and to maintain a safe following distance of at least four to six seconds behind the vehicle in front. Akinbiyi reiterated the importance of compliance with traffic regulations and cooperation with TRACE officers. The agency has pledged to enforce stricter measures to ensure road safety throughout the rainy season. Motorists are encouraged to contact TRACE’s emergency lines, either 112 or 0806 270 3568—for assistance in case of emergencies. As the rainy season continues, local authorities are working to address infrastructure issues that contribute to dangerous road conditions. While some areas remain prone to flooding due to inadequate drainage systems, officials say increased vigilance from both drivers and enforcement agencies will help mitigate risks. With more than one-third of Nigeria’s population relying on private motor vehicles for daily commuting, the need for improved road safety awareness has never been greater.
