The confrontation unfolded on Tuesday as the Congress continued its sit-in outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in Delhi, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a discussion on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), and an inquiry into alleged police action against demonstrators. Singh claimed that he and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan were dispatched by the government to engage with senior Congress leaders following the sit-in near Akbar Road. During the meeting, Singh stated that he informed Rahul Gandhi that the government had accepted the demand for a parliamentary discussion on NEET and related student issues. However, according to Singh, Gandhi then introduced a new condition, demanding the resignation of Pradhan. This, Singh argued, represented a reversal of the initial agreement, undermining the spirit of democratic dialogue. Delhi Police subsequently intervened to disperse the protesters, removing Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and several other senior Congress leaders from the premises. The police detained multiple figures, including Charanjit Singh Channi, K Suresh, and Kanhaiya Kumar, as the sit-in was forcibly cleared. The move sparked immediate controversy, with critics accusing the authorities of using excessive force against peaceful dissenters. Meanwhile, the Congress-led protests were not confined to Delhi alone. In Uttarakhand, a tragic incident occurred during preparations for the "Chhatron Ki Goonj" student outreach program. Amar Mehta, a Congress leader, sustained fatal injuries when an iron rod fell on his head at the Bannu School Ground in Dehradun. The incident took place as the event was being organized in anticipation of Rahul Gandhi’s visit. Local officials confirmed that Mehta was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the Congress party expressed deep sorrow over the loss, vowing to continue the program despite the tragedy. Rahul Gandhi, who is set to address the students during the "Chhatron Ki Goonj" initiative, has remained vocal in criticizing the alleged leakage of exam papers in the 2025 Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC) exams. He has accused the state government of hypocrisy, claiming that anti-cheating measures exist only on paper. The program aims to spotlight systemic flaws within the education sector, including irregularities in examinations and broader challenges facing students. On a separate front, the Congress has vowed to oppose a series of contentious constitutional amendment bills, including those related to delimitation and the removal of ministers and chief ministers, should they be introduced during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament. The party has emphasized its commitment to maintaining unity among opposition parties, despite growing internal divisions and defections from regional allies. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal outlined the party’s legislative priorities, highlighting the need to address public grievances over the alleged theft of donations intended for the Ram Temple, irregularities in NEET and CBSE exams, and the E20 fuel blending scandal. The party also called for discussions on foreign policy matters, including tensions with China and the United States, and developments in the Middle East. Jairam Ramesh, another Congress leader, warned that the government might attempt to reintroduce the Delimitation Bill, which previously failed to secure the required two-thirds majority. The party has consistently opposed such measures, arguing that they threaten electoral fairness. As the monsoon session approaches, the Congress faces the challenge of balancing its traditional role as a critic of the ruling dispensation with the need to foster cohesion among fragmented opposition forces.
