A demonstration organized by the AfD youth group Generation Deutschland in Schwerin turned violent when its Hamburg state chairman, Michael Schumann, was attacked and injured. The incident occurred amid a large gathering of supporters and counter-protesters in the city center on August 1, 2026. According to police reports, three individuals are under investigation for suspected assault. The attack took place before the official start of the event, during which demonstrators were still arriving. The demonstration, titled “Tag der Deutschen Jugend,” drew around 400 participants according to police estimates. They gathered in the historic Old Garden area of Schwerin’s city center. At the same time, approximately 500 counter-protesters attempted to drown out the event with loud chants. Police used barriers to separate the two groups. Schumann, who was en route from his car to the meeting point, was reportedly attacked and sustained injuries. He received initial treatment at the scene by emergency services, though the severity of his wounds and whether he was hospitalized remained unclear at the time. Police confirmed that they had identified three suspects in connection with the alleged assault. However, they did not confirm claims made by the AfD Hamburg branch, which accused anti-fascist activists of carrying out the attack. The party stated that Schumann required hospital treatment, and a photo published by the magazine Nius showed him with a bleeding head wound. The police spokesperson noted that the incident happened before the main event began, as attendees were still arriving. Following the demonstration, members of Generation Deutschland proceeded through the city center in a procession. Counter-protesters tried to block their path using sit-ins, prompting the organizers to alter the planned route. The police presence was extensive, with officers from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, and North Rhine-Westphalia deployed to manage the situation. Despite the tensions, no major incidents beyond the assault on Schumann were reported. The demonstration was part of a broader series of activities by the AfD youth organization, which has been increasingly active in recent months. The group has held similar events in other cities, often drawing both support and opposition. This particular gathering in Schwerin was notable for its size and the level of confrontation between opposing groups. In addition to the violence at the demonstration, another unrelated protest affected traffic in Bavaria. On the same day, the Fernpass, a key north-south highway connecting Germany to Austria and Italy, was closed due to a demonstration against increased traffic flow. Authorities had feared potential congestion, especially given the start of summer vacation in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. However, traffic continued to move smoothly despite the closure, and minimal traffic was recorded near the Füssen border tunnel. The demonstration was scheduled to last until noon, but there were no reports of significant disruptions.
