President orders cooperatives to enter palm oil business chain

President Prabowo Subianto has directed domestic cooperatives to become active participants in Indonesia's palm oil supply chain, from plantation management to downstream product manufacturing. The initiative, outlined by Cooperatives Minister Ferry Juliantono, seeks to reduce private sector dominance over the industry and create a more equitable system for small-scale farmers. Currently, private companies control most aspects of the palm oil business, leading to situations where oil palm growers struggle to access basic products like cooking oil. To address this, the government is partnering with state-owned enterprises to establish cooperative-run plantations and processing facilities. A major project includes building a cooperative-based crude palm oil mill in South Sumatra, intended as a model for future expansion into other agricultural sectors.
