Ponos, pogum, tovarištvo in solidarnost pod črno uniformo

On the occasion of Miner's Day, celebrated annually on July 3rd in remembrance of the five-day hunger strike by miners of the Zasavski mines in 1934, 28 new apprentices were welcomed into the Velenje Coal Mine (Premogovnik Velenje) during the traditional event 'Skok čez kožo' (Jump Over Leather). This ceremony, held at the Velenje mining station, marks the initiation of young people into the mining profession. The event has historical roots dating back to the 16th century, when miners in Czech and Slovak regions would jump over a leather harness as part of their induction. Today, the tradition continues with new apprentices undergoing a symbolic ritual involving a leather harness, a speech, and a toast before jumping over it. Local mayors Peter Dermol of Velenje and Boris Goličnik of Šoštanj participated in a ceremonial jump this year, highlighting their involvement in shaping key legislation related to the closure of the mine and restructuring of the Šaleška region.
