The trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, accused of orchestrating the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, has begun in Las Vegas after nearly three decades. Davis, 63, faces charges of murder using deadly force and acting as an accomplice to a criminal gang. He has been in custody since late 2023 and has consistently denied wrongdoing throughout the proceedings, according to reports from local authorities. The case, long considered one of the most infamous unsolved murders in music history, is now entering its final phase with the start of his trial. Tupac Shakur was killed on September 13, 1996, just six days after he had been severely wounded in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. At the time, he was 25 years old. The incident occurred during a return trip from a boxing match featuring Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon. Tupac and co-driver Marion "Suge" Knight were traveling in a black BMW when they were stopped at a traffic light near the Las Vegas Strip. A white Cadillac pulled up behind them, and gunfire erupted. Tupac was shot multiple times, while Knight suffered less severe injuries. Authorities have yet to identify who fired the shots, though prosecutors allege that Davis played a central role in organizing the attack and securing the weapons used. Investigators emphasize that Davis was among the few surviving participants still alive. His public statements over the years, including interviews and an autobiographical book published in 2019, have provided crucial information that led law enforcement to reopen the investigation. Without these revelations, prosecutors say, the case might never have reached this stage. The defense argues that there is no direct evidence linking Davis to the murder. His attorneys claim the accusations rest on testimonies from individuals not present at the scene and challenge the credibility of Davis’s book, which they describe as partly fictional and written in collaboration with another author. They also assert that the interview Davis gave to federal investigators should have remained confidential and should not have been used as evidence in court. According to the indictment, the motive for the killing was revenge. Prosecutors claim that Tupac and his associates had physically assaulted Davis's nephew, Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, several hours before the shooting. In his autobiography, Davis describes this altercation as the moment when “the line was crossed.” He claims he handed a gun to individuals seated in the back of the Cadillac and later believed Tupac was reaching for a weapon, prompting one of the passengers to open fire. However, a retired Las Vegas police detective, Clifford Mogg, stated that no firearms were found in the vehicle occupied by Tupac and Knight. For Tupac’s family, the trial represents a painful but necessary step toward uncovering the truth. His half-brother, Maurice "Mopreme" Shakur, expressed hope that the legal process would finally clarify what happened. “Nothing can bring Tupac back,” he said, “but I still believe in a fair trial and that we will learn the truth.” He also called for further investigation into potential connections between Sean "Diddy" Combs and the case. Davis claimed in his book that Combs wanted Tupac and Knight dead, though the renowned music mogul has consistently denied any involvement in the murder. The case has become emblematic of a broader conflict within the hip-hop industry. According to testimony from the investigation, the killing marked the peak of a long-standing rivalry between record labels Death Row Records and Bad Boy Records, along with their affiliated street gangs. Death Row, for which both Tupac and Knight were associated, was embroiled in a bitter feud with Bad Boy, which was run by Combs. This tension ultimately spilled into the streets, leading to violence that culminated in Tupac’s death.
