The mushroom season has officially begun, marking another year of fascination with these versatile fungi. This time, the focus is on both their culinary and cultural significance, as well as their role in science, art, and design. A new book titled Mushrooms, published by Taschen Verlag, has been released as the best-selling title of the year. The book explores the multifaceted appeal of mushrooms through 292 pages filled with recipes, stories, and visual art. The publication is part of a series produced by The Gourmand, a magazine founded in 2011 by David Lane and Marina Tweed in London. The Gourmand combines culinary practice with cultural reflection, and this latest volume continues that tradition. It features 46 original recipes from around the world, showcasing how mushrooms are prepared and cherished in different cultures. These include crispy tempura, creamy risotto, and traditional Polish pierogis, which are especially popular during Christmas. The book also delves into the historical and scientific intrigue surrounding mushrooms. For centuries, they have captivated human imagination, from the psychedelic experiences associated with magic mushrooms in the 1970s to their modern applications as sustainable materials in packaging and architecture. The text highlights the unique biological nature of mushrooms, noting that they were once classified as plants but are actually more closely related to animals at a molecular level. This connection explains their pharmaceutical potential, as they produce compounds used in medicine. One section of the book examines the hidden underground network of mycelium, the root-like structures of fungi, that can span vast areas. For example, the honey fungus found in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon forms an extensive system covering over 1,000 hectares, weighing up to 30,000 tons and being nearly 8,600 years old. This demonstrates the incredible longevity and complexity of fungal ecosystems. Another chapter explores the dual nature of certain mushrooms, such as the death cap, which can be both a delicacy and a deadly poison. Properly dosed, some toxic species like the fly agaric have medicinal uses, including aiding childbirth and controlling bleeding. Additionally, the fly agaric serves as a precursor to the hallucinogenic substance LSD, which is derived from psilocybin-containing magic mushrooms. The chapter “Mind Over Mushroom” discusses these psychoactive properties, while other sections highlight the influence of mushrooms on art, music, literature, architecture, and design. The book also celebrates the aesthetic appeal of mushrooms, as illustrated in the chapter “Form Follows Funghi.” Here, examples include lamps designed in the shape of mushrooms, such as Verner Panton’s iconic “Panthella” lamp, whose dome-shaped shade resembles a fungal structure. Similarly, American architect Earl Young, known for his organic building style, designed homes that mimicked the growth patterns of mushrooms, particularly his “Thatch House,” which featured a layered, mushroom-like roof covered in straw. A special section dedicated to the work of artist Philip Guston further illustrates the cultural impact of mushrooms. His late shift toward figurative painting is likened to the unexpected emergence of mushrooms, both representing a surprising and transformative growth. This metaphor underscores the enduring allure of mushrooms, whether in nature, art, or science.
