The initiative was officially announced Friday, with members of the Oregon State women’s basketball team submitting a petition to state regulatory authorities, seeking legal recognition for collective bargaining under state law. This effort follows a series of failed attempts to establish similar structures in other collegiate programs. In 2024, a group of women’s basketball players had previously sent letters to leaders of the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences, requesting a formal process to address concerns related to college athletics. Those requests were ultimately rejected, prompting the current wave of unionization activity. Now, more than 100 female athletes have signed union authorization cards with the UCAA, pledging support for collective bargaining and representation in negotiations with their institutions. Despite these advances, opposition persists from NCAA leadership, which has historically maintained that student-athletes are not employees and thus should not be subject to labor laws. However, some university officials have expressed openness to collective bargaining as a potential solution to systemic challenges facing collegiate sports. For instance, Tennessee athletic director Danny White has publicly endorsed collective bargaining as a viable path forward, acknowledging the need for meaningful change in how colleges manage athlete-related issues. Efforts to unionize at institutions such as Dartmouth and Southern California encountered setbacks in 2024, largely due to shifting policies in college sports and the influence of the Trump administration’s National Labor Relations Board, which was perceived as unlikely to endorse such initiatives. These obstacles highlight the complex legal and political landscape surrounding the unionization of college athletes, which continues to evolve amid increasing pressure from student-athletes demanding better treatment and transparency.
