An agreement was also reached between Dinamo and Porto regarding a potential future compensation should Varela make another transfer. The story began in the summer of 2024, when Varela, just 15 years old, emerged as one of the standout talents in the Portuguese national team that reached the final of the European Under-17 Championship. His performances caught the attention of major European clubs such as Manchester City, Barcelona, and Borussia Dortmund. However, instead of signing a professional contract with Porto or moving to one of these elite clubs, an unexpected turn of events unfolded. Varela's name became linked with the Croatian fourth-tier club NK Dinamo Odranski Obrež, raising concerns that this might have been an attempt to circumvent FIFA’s rules on international transfers of minors. At the same time, information came to light questioning the circumstances surrounding the entire transfer, prompting FIFA to launch an investigation into possible violations of the rules protecting minor players.
