A newly discovered celestial object has blurred the boundary between planets and moons, challenging existing definitions in astronomy. The object, which is roughly the mass of Jupiter, orbits a brown dwarf, a dim, failed star that fuses deuterium but lacks the mass to sustain hydrogen fusion like true stars. This system, named CD-35 2722, was identified by astronomers led by Kevin Hoy of the University of Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile, through observations made with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile over multiple periods between October 2023 and February 2026. The discovery highlights a unique configuration: the brown dwarf itself orbits a small red dwarf star, while the massive object, classified as neither a planet nor a moon, orbits the brown dwarf. This hierarchical structure makes the system distinct from the Solar System, where planetary classifications rely heavily on orbital relationships and physical properties. Hoy and his team noted that current terminology fails to adequately describe this new type of celestial body, which does not fit neatly into either category. While the International Astronomical Union (IAU) defines a planet based on its gravitational dominance over other bodies within its orbit, Hoy argues that the hierarchical nature of this system complicates such categorizations. According to the IAU’s definition, an object with planetary mass orbiting a brown dwarf would still qualify as a planet, even if the brown dwarf itself orbits another star. However, Hoy suggests that the traditional framework for classifying planets may not apply here due to the unusual structure of the system. David Kipping, an astronomer at Columbia University, supports this view, noting that the IAU’s definition focuses more on the relationship between objects rather than their intrinsic characteristics. He points out that the IAU’s decision in 2018 to classify a planet-like object orbiting a brown dwarf as an exoplanet underscores how the definition can shift depending on context. Yet, Hoy remains unconvinced that calling the object a planet fully captures its significance. This finding is not isolated. In January, another research group announced potential evidence of a similar satellite orbiting a brown dwarf in a different stellar system. If confirmed, this object could have nearly half the mass of Jupiter, further complicating efforts to define boundaries between celestial bodies. Historically, the concept of a planet has evolved alongside our understanding of the cosmos. Ancient Greeks coined the term “wandering star” to describe objects that moved against the backdrop of fixed stars. The Copernican revolution shifted focus to motion around the Sun, yet movement remained central to the definition. As outlined in the IAU’s official definition, a planet is defined by its gravitational influence over surrounding space, not solely by size or composition. This perspective aligns with observations of the Solar System itself. For instance, Saturn’s Titan and Jupiter’s Ganymede, both large satellites, are comparable in mass and size to Mercury, the smallest planet. If these were to orbit other stars instead of planets, they might be classified differently, highlighting how context shapes astronomical classifications. The discovery of CD-35 2722 raises fundamental questions about how we categorize celestial objects. It challenges long-standing assumptions and invites a reevaluation of what constitutes a planet, moon, or other types of celestial bodies. As more such systems are discovered, the need for updated definitions becomes increasingly urgent. Scientists continue to refine their understanding, driven by the ever-expanding universe of possibilities.
