According to the Korean Central News Agency, Kim emphasized that seizing absolute superiority in drone technology is an indispensable requirement given the evolving nature of modern warfare. He stated that strength equates to peace and that peace is secured solely through strength. The demonstration included suicide attack drones, multipurpose drones equipped to fire air-to-surface missiles, cruise missiles, and 600-millimeter multiple rocket launchers. State media claimed that the drones and cruise missiles struck an island target with total accuracy. This display of weaponry follows a series of recent tests by Pyongyang. These include a new precision-guided torpedo system and an intermediate-range hypersonic missile, both of which were described as employing artificial intelligence technology. In early October, North Korea announced the successful testing of the hypersonic missile, noting that it uses AI to alter its trajectory at low altitudes. A few days prior to the drone demonstration, North Korean forces tested two types of strategic submarine-launched cruise missiles. Additionally, a new type of precision torpedo utilizing AI for guidance and target detection was recently showcased. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported detecting around a dozen short-range ballistic missiles fired from the Wonsan area of North Korea toward the East Sea on Thursday. The projectiles traveled approximately 250 kilometers. Seoul’s military indicated that South Korea and the United States are conducting a detailed analysis of the missiles’ specific characteristics and have intensified surveillance for potential additional launches. The South Korean National Security Office condemned the launches as violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions, describing them as serious actions that fail to assist in managing the current regional situation. The escalation in military activity occurs amidst heightened tensions stemming from a landmine explosion along the heavily fortified border between the two nations. Three South Korean soldiers were injured in the incident. A joint investigation by Seoul and the United Nations concluded earlier this month that North Korea had planted the mines more than a year prior. Seoul accused Pyongyang of a clear breach of the Armistice Agreement and requested an apology, a demand that North Korea dismissed with mockery. Tensions were further exacerbated last week when Kim Yo Jong, the sister of Kim Jong Un, declared that the North would deploy loudspeakers along the border within days and placed unspecified new countermeasures on alert. Both countries have historically employed loudspeakers broadcasting propaganda across their shared boundary as part of psychological warfare operations. Subsequently, South Korea proposed military negotiations to mutually verify the precise location of the border and restore communication channels, but Pyongyang has not responded to the proposal. The Demilitarized Zone remains one of the world’s most heavily fortified frontiers, and previous landmine incidents have frequently spiked diplomatic friction. Technically, the two Koreas remain in a state of war because the conflict concluded in 1953 with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty. This increase in hostilities coincides with recent diplomatic overtures from US President Donald Trump toward North Korea. Such moves have generated concern in Seoul that South Korea, a key US ally, might be excluded from potential nuclear discussions involving Pyongyang. In recent remarks, Trump appeared to minimize the likelihood of a summit while asserting that his personal relationship with Kim Jong Un remains very good.
