Dennis Rodman’s life has been portrayed through the lens of eccentricity, his tattoos, his unkempt hair, his chaotic behavior, but a new documentary titled Rodman: In Good and Evil offers a more intimate look into the man behind the myth. The film explores the personal struggles of one of basketball’s most controversial figures, revealing a complex individual whose greatest battles were fought within himself. Born into poverty in Dallas, Texas, Rodman grew up without a father, who left the family when he was just three years old. He described feeling ashamed and afraid, convinced he would end up in jail as a drug dealer or dead. After being kicked out of his high school soccer team and struggling in basketball, his mother gave him an ultimatum: find a job or move out. Rodman recalls sitting on his friend's porch with a bag of trash clothes, having no plans. Over the course of nearly two years, he slept in parks and worked odd jobs for $5 per day. During this time, he gained almost 30 centimeters, which earned him a scholarship to Southeastern Oklahoma State University. There, he became a standout player and was selected with the 27th pick in the 1986 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. Under the guidance of the “Bad Boys” franchise and coach Chuck Daly, who became like a second father to him, Rodman found stability and success. With the Pistons, he won two championships and twice was named the league’s best defensive player. After the collapse of the championship team, Rodman’s world crumbled. In 1993, police found him sleeping in his truck with a loaded gun, and many believed he was on the edge of suicide. This moment marked a turning point. He transformed into the “Crazy” everyone knew, joining the San Antonio Spurs and later the Chicago Bulls, where he formed an unstoppable trio with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. The Bulls went on to win three consecutive titles. Yet, while he was a genius on the court, off it, he was a spectacle. His career was riddled with incidents: suspended for six games and fined $20,000 after headbutting a referee, and later banned for 11 games after kicking a cameraman. He promoted his autobiography Bad As I Wanna Be, appeared in Madonna’s wedding, had a brief relationship with her, and married Carmen Electrom. He became a media phenomenon, arguably more famous than Jordan in Chicago for a period. Yet beneath the tattoos and bravado lay a deeply troubled soul. Alcohol was one of his demons, but the worst, he admits, was trying to convince himself he was a good father. In an ESPN interview, he tearfully confessed, “I lie to myself a lot. ‘I’m a great dad. I love my kids.’ Then I come home and hate myself because I know they’re all lies.” His father, Philander, abandoned him early in life, and Rodman, who grew up without a father, ironically became the same to his children. At his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011, he broke down and apologized for not being there for them. His battle continues today. He lives ten kilometers away from his son DJ and daughter Trinity, yet the thought of visiting them paralyzes him. “I want to, but it’s not easy,” he says. “The hardest part is getting out of that cycle. You feel like it’s too late.” His life has always been a search for what he never had. “I think people will say after the movie, ‘Wow. He didn’t want money. He didn’t want fame. He just wanted someone to care about him and love him,’” he says. The irony is that this is exactly what his children want from him.
