The agreement was signed in Đakovo in the presence of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Archbishop Đuro Hranić, and Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister David Vlajčić. The compensation involves approximately 2,300 hectares of forest and forest land, which were allocated to the archdiocese as substitute assets. This concludes a legal process that began in 1997, addressing historical injustices against the Catholic Church. The Church waived a total value of €25 million and accepted €16 million in compensation to finalize the matter. The resolution of this issue involved previous agreements covering 9,400 hectares, leaving only the remaining 2,300 hectares unresolved.

The deal was signed in Đakovo in the presence of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Bishop Đuro Hranić. The land was provided as replacement assets rather than monetary compensation, reflecting the Church’s preference for natural assets over cash. The process, which had been ongoing since 1997, involved extensive negotiations and collaboration across multiple government agencies. The Bishop expressed gratitude to the prime minister and minister for their political will and dedication to resolving the historical injustice. The agreement concludes a broader effort where 9400 hectares were previously resolved, with the remaining 2300 hectares valued at €16 million. The Church agreed to this amount to facilitate closure of the complex legal and financial process.

"Ne bismo pristali na novac"The article reports on an agreement signed between the Croatian government and the Đakovo-Osijek Bishopric regarding the transfer of ownership rights over forest land and wooded land near Đakovo. This land was meant to serve as compensation for property that could not be returned during the denationalization process. The agreement was signed in Đakovo in the presence of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Bishop Đuro Hranić, and Minister of Agriculture David Vlajčić. The Bishopric requested a solution based on 'square for square' rather than monetary compensation, which they considered unacceptable. The process had been ongoing since 1997, and the resolution has corrected a historical injustice. The Bishopric agreed to accept 16 million euros worth of land instead of the originally claimed 25 million euros, demonstrating goodwill. The prime minister will also visit a Roma settlement later in his visit.
