Pantisano emphasized that while law enforcement can arrest perpetrators and potentially prevent attacks through surveillance, it cannot combat hate or prevent radicalization. He called on the government to visibly support the queer community, citing symbolic actions such as flying rainbow flags at the German parliament and investing in educational programs aimed at countering prejudice. He stressed that political leaders must take a more active role in supporting structures and initiatives that help reduce hostility toward LGBTQ+ individuals. The attack in Berlin was not the first of its kind against the queer community. Earlier this year, a lesbian couple was attacked in a Bremen tram after kissing, and targeted assaults on gay men occurred in the Friedrichshain Park. These incidents have left many within the community feeling vulnerable and underrepresented politically. Despite the shock and grief following the recent attack, members of the queer community have responded with measured resolve rather than immediate outrage. They have drawn attention to past failures in addressing violence against LGBTQ+ individuals and have highlighted the need for sustained political engagement rather than reactive measures. In response to the attack, the Hamburg police announced plans to increase security presence during the upcoming CSD parade in Hamburg. According to officials, there are currently no specific threats identified, but the police are prepared to ensure maximum safety for participants. The number of officers deployed will be higher than usual, and the police will work closely with organizers to implement proven security strategies. This includes enhanced street protection and technical barriers to prevent vehicle-related attacks. Approximately 250,000 people are expected to attend the event. Meanwhile, the investigation into the Berlin attack continues. The suspect, Abdul B., drove a van into a crowd near the CSD parade before attacking additional victims with a knife. One woman died, and 31 others were injured. Police confirmed that B. was killed during a confrontation on Sunday. Authorities believe the motive was linked to Islamic extremism, and they are investigating whether he had ties to the Islamic State. At a temporary memorial site near the attack location, police discovered signs of vandalism, including a destroyed vase and what appeared to be a burned paper heart. The state police are conducting further inquiries into the incident. Criticism has also emerged regarding how some political groups have addressed the attack. The Left Party’s district branch in Neukölln faced backlash for initially failing to acknowledge the Islamic extremist motives behind the attack in a social media post. Instead, the post focused on framing the attack as being driven by right-wing and conservative ideologies. This led to criticism from CDU figures, who pointed out the party's failure to address the issue of political Islam. The Neukölln branch later corrected its statement, and its candidate for the Berlin state election apologized for the oversight. However, Pantisano used the situation to criticize conservative politicians for cutting funding for queer projects and portraying the community negatively before positioning themselves as protectors. The attack has reignited discussions about the broader societal challenges facing the queer community in Germany. While the government and police have taken steps to enhance security and respond to the tragedy, activists argue that long-term solutions require more than just increased police presence or symbolic gestures.
