The president, who had initially been invited only by FIFA, decided to attend after receiving a direct call from Trump, who personally extended her an invitation. Sheinbaum expressed her decision with a reference to the old saying, “Lo cortés no quita lo valiente,” meaning that politeness does not excuse courage. The event took place at the MetLife Stadium, where Sheinbaum shared a box with First Lady Melania Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Spanish King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The atmosphere was described as one of cordiality, with laughter, handshakes, and conversations among attendees. During the match, which saw Spain defeat Argentina, Sheinbaum engaged in discussions with Trump and other officials, addressing topics such as trade and diplomatic relations. She noted that while the conversation did not involve major policy issues during the game, they discussed pending matters and hoped for future communication. Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of maintaining respectful diplomatic ties with the United States, highlighting their geographic proximity and the large Mexican diaspora in the country. She stated that while there may be disagreements with Trump on certain policies, these should not become personal issues. She reiterated that both sides have shown mutual respect and that actions taken to protect Mexicans living in the U.S. remain essential. In addition to attending the World Cup final, the Mexican government has taken further steps regarding the deaths of 17 Mexican nationals under U.S. immigration authorities' custody. On July 13, the Mexican Embassy in the U.S., led by Ambassador Roberto Lazzeri, filed 20 complaints with state and county prosecutors in eight states, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas. These cases include fatalities that occurred during operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On July 14, the embassy formally requested the Department of Justice to open investigations into the incidents and provide updates on their progress. The request was made through the U.S. State Department. The government also sought clarification on the conditions within detention centers, including those operated by private companies, and called for detailed reports on each case. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Secretary Roberto Velasco, informed the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, about the situation and requested information to assess compliance with international human rights standards. This step aims to ensure that appropriate recommendations are made to prevent similar incidents in the future. Mexican consulates continue to offer legal support, assistance with the repatriation of remains, and help with all necessary procedures for families affected by the deaths. The government has also noted the return of documents related to agents involved in the deaths, following previous requests for transparency. These measures reflect Mexico’s ongoing efforts to address concerns over the treatment of migrants and citizens under U.S. immigration authority, particularly in light of recent fatalities. As the government continues its diplomatic engagement with U.S. agencies, the focus remains on ensuring accountability and improving conditions for individuals under immigration control.
