The boundary between health and injury is extremely thin, yet many sports enthusiasts continue pushing their bodies beyond safe limits, often leading to surgical interventions. A growing number of individuals, both young and old, are experiencing severe consequences from overexertion, with some requiring operations to repair damage caused by years of intense physical activity. Jonathan Price, a 50-year-old director who has spent his life running, playing rugby, and water skiing, began noticing signs of wear and tear in his body during his mid-40s. He experienced prolonged pain after runs, frequent cramps in his lower back, and eventually required knee replacements at age 47. Orthopedic surgeon Giles Stafford warns that human joints have a limited lifespan, comparing them to car suspensions. Each person has a certain number of cycles they can endure before damage begins. Those who regularly attend the gym, run marathons, or perform high-intensity workouts reach this limit faster. Overuse leads to cartilage degradation, resulting in osteoarthritis, which significantly impacts daily life. Young athletes are equally vulnerable. Naomi Pannell, a 27-year-old CrossFit enthusiast, suffered a complete rupture of her anterior cruciate ligament during a competition in Madrid at 36 degrees Celsius. She recalls lifting heavy sandbags and suddenly feeling her knee dislocate. “I cried for a week,” she admits. Surgeon Saket Tibrewal attributes such injuries to exhaustion. High-intensity programs demand repeated strain, and when muscles become overly fatigued, control over the joint is lost, leading to rapid deterioration. Many athletes ignore pain signals. Chris Dunn, a 49-year-old runner, continued competing despite a severely damaged knee, to the point that his bones had shifted against each other. Although he sustained a cruciate ligament tear in 2015, he kept training for marathons and Ironman triathlons. It wasn’t until last year, when he could no longer walk after several kilometers, that he sought medical help and underwent a reconstructive surgery. While he successfully returned to running, many others lack his luck. Experts emphasize that sitting still can cause just as much harm as overtraining. Lack of movement reduces blood flow to the joints, increasing inflammation. Dr. David Vaux advises viewing exercise in middle age as a medication, one that must be taken carefully. Taking too little or too much can lead to problems. The best approach involves moderation and consistency. A slow walk, a gentle jog, or cycling a few times a week can work wonders. However, strength training should not involve extreme loads. Rest plays a crucial role in recovery. The body sustains microscopic damage during exercise, but it repairs and strengthens itself during rest periods. If given insufficient time to recover, permanent damage can occur. Experts recommend always listening to one’s body. Persistent pain, swelling, and declining performance are clear indicators that rest is needed.

Zašto činjenice (85): The article accurately reports on Jonathan Price's experience with osteoarthritis and his hip replacement, aligning closely with the primary source from The Guardian. It mentions his lifelong athletic activities, the progression of his symptoms, and the medical opinion of orthopedic surgeon Giles St

Zašto objektivnost (70): The tone leans slightly toward caution regarding over-exercising, particularly highlighting the risks faced by athletes like Naomi Pannell. While it presents both sides of the issue (Price's case and Pannell's injury), it emphasizes the consequences of excessive training more prominently, suggesting
