Marseille authorities have seized over 51,000 plush toys and other children's items deemed dangerous after inspections at the port revealed hazardous materials. The goods, mostly originating from China and intended for sale during the holiday season, were intercepted by customs officials since early summer at the Marseille-Fos port. These products failed to meet European safety standards due to the presence of prohibited substances or design flaws that could pose risks to young users. The customs service issued a statement highlighting concerns over the increasing volume of toy imports during this time of year. Officials noted that many of these items appear harmless but can conceal harmful chemicals or structural defects. Recent laboratory tests confirmed alarming levels of toxic substances in some of the confiscated goods. Among the items, 5,800 stuffed animals were found to contain cancerogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic chemicals at concentrations up to four times higher than allowed limits. In addition to the plush toys, 25,973 decorative jewelry pieces, primarily necklaces and bracelets, were also seized. Analysis showed these items contained excessive amounts of heavy metals such as nickel and lead, both of which exceed regulatory thresholds. Collectively, more than 51,368 items were declared non-compliant with safety requirements. These products will soon be destroyed following official procedures. Customs officers have been conducting increased checks at the port throughout the summer as part of routine oversight. The surge in toy shipments aligns with seasonal demand, prompting heightened scrutiny to ensure imported goods adhere to strict European safety regulations. The findings underscore ongoing challenges in monitoring product quality and enforcing compliance, particularly with goods sourced from countries with less stringent oversight. The majority of the seized items were destined for French retailers ahead of the Christmas shopping period. This highlights the broader issue of counterfeit or substandard products entering the market through unofficial channels. While some manufacturers may attempt to bypass regulations by mislabeling their products or using alternative supply routes, customs inspections remain a critical tool in identifying and preventing such violations. French customs officials emphasized that while many imported toys are safe, the presence of hazardous materials in a significant number of cases raises serious concerns.
