A Californian man has been rescued after surviving 45 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean following a solo sailing accident. Kaichi “Kai” Sato, 39, was found by a container ship on July 21, nearly three months after setting out from Catalina Island near California's coast on June 7. His attempt to complete his first solo trans-Pacific voyage ended in disaster when his mast broke just two weeks into the journey. Sato described his ordeal as one of profound hardship and despair. After the mast snapped, he was left drifting southward, unable to steer his vessel. He recounted feeling like a "sitting duck," helpless against the ocean's relentless currents. During the first week, he struggled with intense emotions, even contemplating ending his life by suffocating himself while trying to start the engine. He eventually gave up on using the motor, realizing it had run out of fuel and would not help him reach safety. In an effort to survive, Sato resorted to makeshift repairs, using PVC pipes and kayak paddles to fix his sails. To sustain himself, he relied on limited supplies, eating leftover oatmeal, and scavenging for fish and squid that washed ashore. He also devised a method to collect fresh water by storing seawater in buckets and using plastic bags to capture condensation, which he drank directly from. Sato emphasized the role of spiritual practices in helping him endure the grueling conditions. He engaged in meditation and spoke to the elements around him, finding strength in his connection to nature. He also drew inspiration from his late uncle, a former sailor who guided him during a childhood trip from California to Hawaii. This memory became a source of resilience as he continued his journey. For over a month, Sato navigated the vast expanse of the Pacific, gradually adjusting his course toward his intended destination. On July 21, he was finally spotted by the Pasha Hawaii container ship M/V George III, approximately 900 miles from the Hawaiian coastline. According to the ship's captain, Eric Veloni, the crew located Sato and provided immediate assistance. They offered him food and water, including a barbecue meal, which he described as a welcome relief. Sato expressed deep gratitude upon being rescued, describing his emotional state as one of pure joy and relief. He shared how he had been "crying and so happy" when the rescue team arrived. The encounter marked a turning point in his experience, bringing closure to a harrowing chapter of his life. Looking ahead, Sato intends to remain with family in Hawaii for some time before embarking on another sailing adventure.
