Litvanija održava pogreb dobrovoljaca ubijenog u borbi u Ukrajini

Vilnius, Lithuania, A solemn ceremony took place on Sunday in a church in the Lithuanian capital as dozens of mourners, including senior politicians and military officers, gathered to honor Ignas Kailius, a 25-year-old volunteer who was killed while fighting alongside Ukrainian forces during Russia’s invasion. The funeral marked the third known death of a Lithuanian citizen in the conflict, underscoring the growing involvement of Lithuanian volunteers in the war effort. Kailius had joined the Ukrainian armed forces in February of this year, serving as an assistant grenade-launcher operator in an infantry unit. His absence was noted after he set out on a combat mission on June 2, and his death was officially confirmed shortly thereafter. According to reports, the area where he was stationed came under fire from Russian forces just before communication with him was lost. Lithuania’s defense chief, General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of Ukraine’s struggle against Russian aggression. He stated that Kailius had recognized the broader implications of Ukraine’s fight, noting that the conflict was not merely about Ukrainian sovereignty but also about the preservation of European independence as a whole. President Gitanas Nausėda expressed his condolences through a statement, acknowledging Kailius’s decision to fight for Ukraine’s freedom. The president highlighted the volunteer’s awareness of the responsibilities that came with such a choice, describing his sacrifice, courage, and commitment to his principles as enduring examples of civic duty and heroism. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius called Kailius “a brave, freedom-loving young man” who chose to fight in one of the most dangerous locations where freedom was being defended at the greatest risk and cost. The prime minister’s remarks reflected the national sentiment toward those who choose to support Ukraine directly. Kailius was part of a unit composed largely of international volunteers, including individuals from Brazil and Colombia. One of his fellow soldiers, André Aguiar, spoke highly of Kailius, calling him an outstanding and reliable soldier who was well-liked among his peers. Aguiar added that Kailius had volunteered specifically to help prevent the spread of Russian aggression beyond Ukraine, including into Lithuania itself. Prior to Kailius’s death, two other Lithuanians, Tadas Tumas and Tomas Valentėlis, had also been killed while fighting on the Ukrainian front. Their deaths had drawn similar expressions of grief and respect from Lithuanian leaders, highlighting the increasing number of citizens willing to take part in the conflict despite the risks involved. The funeral service included the laying of a wreath on behalf of the president, symbolizing the nation’s collective mourning and recognition of Kailius’s contribution. Attendees included members of the military, political figures, and civilians who had come together to pay their respects to a young man whose life was cut short in a distant land. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the participation of Lithuanian volunteers has become more pronounced, reflecting both personal convictions and a broader sense of solidarity with Ukraine. The loss of Kailius serves as a poignant reminder of the human toll of the war, even as the country continues to support Ukraine through diplomatic and material means.
