This follows a major operation in June, during which approximately 238 kilograms of cocaine, valued at around $19 million, was discovered hidden within commercial cargo, including Maggi seasoning cubes, at the same facility. These seizures have intensified scrutiny on the role of local officials in facilitating the smuggling of illicit drugs through Liberia, a region known for its strategic position in transnational organized crime networks. Boakai directed “the immediate dismissal, suspension and investigation of several officials of government and law enforcement personnel” after reviewing the latest status report on ongoing narcotics trafficking investigations. Among those removed from their posts were the airport’s deputy director for operations, the police commissioner for criminal investigation, intelligence and Interpol, and the deputy director for administration at the National Security Agency (NSA). Additionally, all government employees and law enforcement officers indicted in connection with the two major drug seizures were dismissed. These individuals included the airport’s director of security and the deputy commander of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency at the airport. Four employees from the NSA and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection were also dismissed, with their cases referred to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution. The president emphasized that the actions taken follow a coordinated investigation launched after the June seizure, aimed at ensuring that “every individual found responsible is fully accountable under the law.” This approach reflects a broader effort to hold both public servants and traffickers accountable for their roles in enabling the flow of illegal narcotics through the country. West Africa, particularly Liberia, is recognized as a key transit point for cocaine destined for European markets, according to the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.
