Croatian manager Ivan Leko guided Club Brugge to a decisive 3-0 victory over France’s Lens at home on Wednesday night, extending his team’s winning streak to six consecutive matches across all competitions. The result secures six points for the Belgian champions after three rounds of the UEFA Champions League, placing them in eleventh position with a goal difference of nine to six. Goals were scored by Hans Vanaken in the third minute of first-half stoppage time, Joaquin Seys in the 50th minute, and Carlos Forbs in the 72nd minute. This win marks the second major European triumph for Leko in eight days, following a 4-3 away victory against Inter Milan. The match did not start smoothly for the hosts. Lens, managed by Yannick Cahuzac, controlled possession early on and created several dangerous chances. Croatian international Franjo Ivanovic started the game for the visitors and struck the crossbar during the opening period. Club Brugge defender Jorne Spileers made a critical intervention on the goal line to prevent a certain goal, while goalkeeper Yann Sommer produced multiple saves to keep the score level until the final moments of the first half. Vanaken broke the deadlock late in the first half. In the third minute of added time, he capitalized on a deflected ball from a corner kick to slot the ball into the net. Despite leading at halftime, Leko was visibly dissatisfied with his team's performance. Defender Brandon Mechele later revealed that the coach delivered a stern but fair speech in the dressing room. Mechele stated that Leko injected more fire into the squad, urging them to play with greater verticality and intensity in the second half. The tactical adjustment worked immediately. Just five minutes into the second half, Seys doubled the lead. After goalkeeper Robin Riser saved his initial attempt, Seys followed up the rebound and fired a powerful shot under the crossbar. From that point, Club Brugge dominated the contest, playing with increased confidence and control. Lens attempted to mount a comeback but struggled to break down the organized defense. Forbs sealed the victory in the 72nd minute with a precise strike that concluded another successful evening for the Croatian manager. Media reactions highlighted the contrast between the two halves. Spanish outlet AS described the match as a nightmare for Lens, noting their collapse after a promising first period. French publication L'Equipe emphasized the weight of the defeat for the French vice-champions, while the British Guardian praised Club Brugge's professional and convincing display. Analysts pointed to Leko's ability to adapt mid-game as a key factor, similar to his approach against Inter, where his team absorbed pressure before exploiting weaknesses. Club Brugge has found particular success against French opponents in recent years. According to data provider Opta, the club has scored the highest number of goals against French teams in the Champions League since the start of last season. They have defeated Monaco 4-1, Marseille 3-0, and Lens 3-0, accumulating a total goal margin of 10-1 in these encounters. Leko was present for the victories over Marseille and Lens, having taken charge of the team in December 2025. The win over Monaco occurred earlier in September 2025 under previous management. In the current domestic league, Club Brugge sits in second place with 21 points, one behind leaders Gent. Their attacking form has been prolific, averaging three goals per match during their current six-game winning run, which includes victories over Antwerp, Genk, La Louviere, Inter, Lokeren, and Lens. The team has conceded only five goals in that span. Leko returned to Club Brugge in December 2025 after leaving Gent. He quickly led the side to the Belgian championship title, his second trophy with the club, having previously won it there in 2018. Last season, he guided the team to the knockout phase of the Champions League, where they were eliminated by Atletico Madrid after a 3-3 draw at home and a 4-1 loss in Spain. Looking ahead, Club Brugge will travel to face PSV Eindhoven on November 4. Subsequent fixtures include matches against Liverpool, Napoli, Stuttgart, and Bodø/Glimt. With six points secured, the team is close to the top eight positions in the league table, currently trailing eighth-placed Barcelona solely on goal difference. Mechele noted that the squad possesses growing self-confidence, with players eager to take responsibility on the pitch. The performance against Lens demonstrated that the team can maintain high standards against elite opposition, reinforcing Leko's status as one of the most prominent Croatian coaches on the international stage.
